Book Description
Excerpt from Life Movements in Plants With reference to the effect of ether waves on plants, I have given an account of my discovery of the response of all plants to wireless stimulation, the results being similar to that induced by visible light. The perceptive range of the plant is thus infinitely greater than ours for it not only perceives, but also responds to different rays of the vast ethereal spectrum. Book Description
Excerpt from Growth and Tropic Movements of Plants Plant-physiology has been enriched by contributions to knowledge made by a succession of eminent and devoted workers. In regard to my own investigations on the subject, it may not be out of place to state that, being originally intended for the profession of medicine, I had the great advantage of pursuing at the University of Cambridge the study of the life-reactions of both plants and animals. Since then two subjects have claimed my closest attention the physics of inorganic and the physiology of living matter. Book Description
Excerpt from The Study of Plant Life As a result of the present efforts to raise the standard of education in this country, many different Methods of Teaching are receiving our grave consideration. So insistent are their advocates, that we stand in some danger of forgetting that learning. Rather than teaching, is the essential factor in education. It is not the know ledge given us ready-made by the teacher, but that which we learn, acquiring it by our own efforts, which enters into our being and becomes a lasting possession. Therefore this little book does not pretend so much to teach as to act as a guide along the road for those who desire to learn something about the plants around them; hence it points out how much they can easily see for themselves of the wonderful life and work of the silent plants. It is planned for children, whose quick sympathies are more readily drawn towards the life of things than to the dry facts of morphology or classification. Its Leitmotif is therefore the story of life, and those of its activities which find expression in the plant world. Perhaps it may serve to awaken interest in some older people who have not yet been initiated into these mysteries. As is inevitable, most of the actual facts in this book are already the common property of botanists, though some of the suggested work, such as the mapping, is only now being adopted by the Universities. Book Description
Excerpt from The Movements and Habits of Climbing Plants Clematis. - 0. Glandulosa. - The thin upper internodes revolve, moving against the course of the sun, precisely like those of a true twiner, at an average rate, judging from three revolutions, of 3 h. 48 m. The leading shoot immediately twined round a stick placed near it; but, after making an Open spire of only one turn and a half, it ascended for a short space straight, and then reversed its spire and wound two turns in an Opposite course. This was rendered possible by the straight piece between the opposed spires having become rigid. The simple, broad, ovate leaves of this tropical species, so unlike those of most of the other species of the genus, with their short thick petioles, seem but ill fitted for any movement. Whilst twining up a vertical stick, no use is made of them. Nevertheless, if the footstalk of a young leaf be rubbed with a thin twig a few times on any side, it will in the course of a few hours bend to that side; afterwards it becomes straight again. The under side seemed to be the most sensitive; but the sensitiveness or irritability is but slight com pared to that which we shall meet Fig. 1. With in some of the following spe cies; for a loop of string, weighing 164 grain, hanging for some days on a young footstalk, produced a scarcely perceptible effect. A sketch is here given of two young leaves which had naturally caught two twigs on each side of the stem. Book Description
Excerpt from Plant Life Technical terms, which are the intellectual currency of the botanist, and imply in a single word or phrase what would be explained only in long sentences, have not been entirely avoided. Indeed, the author has been compelled to use a considerable number, but an effort has been made to lead up to their use in easy sequence, and to explain as tersely and clearly as possible what they mean. The glossarial index will assist the reader in discovering where the meanings of terms are explained. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
The Power of Movement in Plants By Charles Darwin, 1880 * See Mr. Vines' excellent discussion ('Arbeiten des Bot. Instituts in Würzburg, ' B. II. pp. 142, 143, 1878) on this intricate subject. Hofmeister's observations ('Jahreschrifte des Vereins für Vaterl. Naturkunde in Würtemberg, ' 1874, p. 211) on the curious movements of Spirogyra, a plant consisting of a single row of cells, are valuable in relation to this subject. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.
