Devotional Poems of the heart
Author: Dr. Stewart Snook
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1467061212
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 169
Book Description
This book is a collection of personal and devotional poems. They come from the author's heart. They reflect what is meaningful to him. Each poem is like a piece of the life God gave me. The slice of life that God gives is worth recording. Each poem brings out some of the practical truths of the Christian life which the reader may apply to daily life. Many of these poems often came to me when I remembered some phrase or saying that my parents or grandparents used. The poems follow this order: first, some favorite poems that I like. Then come poems on my personal life, my family life, and making decisions. Then follow poems about special friends, teachers and co-workers. Finally, I conclude with some poems on theological concepts that have intrigued me. The book is devotional in that it directs the readers' hearts to God. They include Scripture and seek to help people follow God, and see God in the everyday things of life. I trust that these lines will lead the reader to a time of reflection, prayer, spiritual decision and growth.

Book Description
First published in 1970, "Another Part of the House" is a simple, direct, intimate story of family life in a small Texas town during the Depression. Told by 10-year-old Larry Morrison, it reflects Larry's uncertainty as he sees the security of his family--mother, father, and 15 year-old brother, Tad--threatened by immediate forces such as his father's ne'er-do-well brother, Uncle Calvin, and by larger, more serious adversaries--the Depression, the drought, the dust and, most incomprehensible of all, death. How the family deals with them while preserving its own strength and unity is the story.

Dictionary of Southern Appalachian English
Author: Michael B. Montgomery
Publisher: UNC Press Books
ISBN: 1469662558
Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 3218
Book Description
The Dictionary of Southern Appalachian English is a revised and expanded edition of the Weatherford Award–winning Dictionary of Smoky Mountain English, published in 2005 and known in Appalachian studies circles as the most comprehensive reference work dedicated to Appalachian vernacular and linguistic practice. Editors Michael B. Montgomery and Jennifer K. N. Heinmiller document the variety of English used in parts of eight states, ranging from West Virginia to Georgia—an expansion of the first edition's geography, which was limited primarily to North Carolina and Tennessee—and include over 10,000 entries drawn from over 2,200 sources. The entries include approximately 35,000 citations to provide the reader with historical context, meaning, and usage. Around 1,600 of those examples are from letters written by Civil War soldiers and their family members, and another 4,000 are taken from regional oral history recordings. Decades in the making, the Dictionary of Southern Appalachian English surpasses the original by thousands of entries. There is no work of this magnitude available that so completely illustrates the rich language of the Smoky Mountains and Southern Appalachia.

ISBN: 0857654314
Category : Humor
Languages : en
Pages : 295
Book Description
Who first wrote ‘absence makes the heart grow fonder’, ‘accidentally on purpose’ or ‘no pain, no gain?' Did you know that there is no evidence Queen Victoria said ‘We are not amused’ or Marie Antoinette proclaimed ‘Let them eat cake’, but ‘iron curtain’ was in use for 40 years before Winston Churchill said it, and we have P. G. Wodehouse to thank for ‘straight from the horse’s mouth’? This witty and accessible compendium reveals the obscure origins of over 500 common phrases, dispelling myths and offering plenty of fascinating facts to delight the trivia-holic in all of us.

Aconcagua: Stone Sentinel
Author: Stephen Platt
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 1912460084
Category : Travel
Languages : en
Pages : 46
Book Description
Preview Price: £6.92 (excl. VAT) Prints in 3-5 business days Aconcagua at nearly 7,000 metres is the highest mountain outside Asia From the south it is a hard, dangerous climb. From the north, given good weather, it is relatively easy. In my twenties I read a book about three Polish climbers who in 1934 made their own equipment and climbed it by a new elegant route up the east ridge. It captured my imagination. Over thirty years later I asked a friend to come with me. He pulled out and I found a trekking company on the Internet and booked. Our approach was from the east and north by the Valle de las Vacas which was much more pleasant than via Plaza de Mulas in the south. The climb took just over two weeks and, apart from the last day when you go for the summit, you have to climb to each camp twice to acclimatise, taking gear up the first day and moving the tents and sleeping kit the second. Although it was an organised trip I felt I climbed it in good style.
