Book Description
Excerpt from Letters of Madame De Sevigne to Her Daughter and Her Friends, Vol. 9 of 9 When your son is at Paris and Versailles, he will sa lute the king, all the ministers, and the whole court. Whatever esteem I entertain for him, I could wish him an uncle only for this first winter; I praise him for his do eility; he has written to us very prettily on the pleasure be naturally feels at saying, fly regiment in fact, such a station is highly agreeable at' eighteen years of age. I pay my compliments to M. De Grignan, as he is the source of the promotion, by sending him to make the first campaign of Philipsburgh. Tell me something of that dear count, whom I have claimed in my letters, and who has abandoned me. Will not your dear son pay you avisit? Let me know when you have sold your company. My son desires to be remembered to you affectionately; he is an admirable and indefatigable leader, never being tired of fine writing, though he has read it over and over again. Your'sister-ia-law has a mini: which does very well in her black hair; what a whim! But I think it would be a greater one to write any longer; we ought to think of conscience, read M. Lo Tourneux, and recollect ourselves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Letters of Madame De Sévigné to Her Daughter and Her Friends, Vol. 3 of 9 M. De la Garde is more confident than ever that you will do wonders by your presence, and is very desirous that the coadjutor should be of the party; it would be worthy of his friendship, and would complete what he began so well at Lambesc: he has good friends, and is thought highly of; he can talk to ministers, is intrepid and fortunate; but I entered fully into all this the other day. We have made the speech among us, in which M. De Grignan is to address the king it is in a style calculated to please his majesty, that is, mild and respectful; yours is to be a little more animated: in short, we took your different tones, and upon rehearsal found that it was just the thing. Book Description
Excerpt from The Letters of Madame De Sevigne to Her Daughter and Friends The Editress has set forth so fully, in the introductory sketch of Madame de Sevigne's Life and Times, her object in offering this book to the American public, that any further prologue may seem superfluous; yet there are one or two things to be said which seem to find their most proper expression in a Preface. Since the date of the first edition, the changes in the manners and feelings of the time have been rapid and continuous; and they have operated in a twofold manner. In the first place, we have become as a nation more thoroughly acquainted with French literature, and better able to appreciate that world of the past in which the great letter-writer lived. Madame de Sevigne was a woman who lived in and for others, - for her daughter, her friends, and, at a greater distance, for the brilliant circle of distinguished men and women of which she herself was so important a figure. Her letters are made up of incident, of meetings, of conversations: they are full of references to the topics then uppermost; they draw half their charm from the personality of the writer. Literature of this sort cannot stand alone. To enjoy it to the full we must know with some minuteness the history of the times in which it was written, and of the people to whom it was written. The knowledge of these things is now spreading wider every year, as we become familiar, through originals or translations, with the masterpieces of foreign languages. For instance, probably the best French sketch of Madame de Sevigne is from the pen of M. Sainte-Beuve, the great critic whom Mr. Arnold acknowledges for his master.
