La réduction des durées de passage et la lutte contre l'engorgement sont les objectif de tous les services d'urgences. Pourtant plus de 400 patients chaque année séjournent plus de 48 heures au sein du service des urgences de l'hôpital Rangueil. La diminution du nombre de séjours prolongés s'inscrit dans un processus global de diminution de la Durée Moyenne de Séjour, mais répond également à des enjeux spécifiques. En étudiant les dossiers des patients qui ont longuement séjourné aux urgences, nous avons réalisé qu'il s'agit principalement de patients très âgés en attente d'un lit d'aval et de patients relevant de la psychiatrie en attente d'une consultation. Nous pensons que des modifications des schémas de prise en charge, et en particulier la facilitation de l'accès aux consultations spécialisées et aux examens complémentaires, ainsi que la mise en place de lits de post-urgence et d'une unité de gériatrie aiguë seront de nature à accélérer le flux des patients au sein des urgences.

Through architecture and urban forms confrontations were crystallized, cultural identities were defined, and social engineering programs were shaped and challenged. In this pathbreaking book, Zeynep elik reads the city of Algiers as the site of social, political, and cultural conflicts during the 132 years of French occupation and argues that architecture and urban forms are integral components of the colonial discourse. Algiers' city planning, based on what elik calls "the trial-and-error" model of French colonial urbanism, included the fragmentation of the casbah, ambitious Beaux Arts schemes to create European forms of housing, master plans inspired by high modernism, and comprehensive regional plans. Eventually a dramatic housing shortage led all planning efforts to be centered on the construction of large-scale residential enclaves. French architects based their designs for domestic space on the concept of the "traditional house," itself an interdisciplinary colonial concept intertwined with the discourse on Algerian women.
