Book Description
Excerpt from Stories and Sketches Relating to Yorkshire There is only a transient, hectic flush in the enjoyment of unrighteous pleasure; for this soon kills the true life of man. You may think, reader, as many others have imagined, that much of the penalty which men in voluntarily pay for the indulgence of unlicensed desire is the result of conventional theory or education, mov ing the soul, as it were, out of a perfect animal condi tion. Truly, if we may credit the old Saxon chronicles, those early barons did live like tangible wolves or other natural brute beasts; but that all this tended to indi vidual well-being or to national prosperity, we must emphatically deny. Book Description
Excerpt from Old Yorkshire: Second Series There is an apology due to the subscribers for the delay which has clogged the passage of the book through the press. That delay arose, in a limited sense, by the Change from the old lines, and the transfer of the venture to other hands. But it was further increased and maintained beyond all proportion, and until out of control, by the political crisis which consumed the closing months of the present year. AS a contribution to the history of his time, the Editor records his belief that such a crisis will not readily recur being, however, forewarned, he will now take care that, in the event Of its recurrence, it shall not produce a similar effect upon the appearance of any subsequent volume of this Series. Book Description
Excerpt from The Yorkshire Coast: And the Cleveland Hills and Dales The purpose of this book needs to be briefly described. It is descriptive of the Yorkshire coast, and of the north-eastern hills of that great and historic county, and a chief object has been to give to localities which are attractive enough in themselves the added interest of the history and the legendary lore that properly belongs to them. The perusal of this book will, indeed, show that almost every village breathes of history, and that there is a host of notable events whereof the Yorkshire coast and its neighbourhood hold record. Most Yorkshiremen know this very well, and they may be glad to possess a book that will remind them of the interest of localities; but those who each year resort in great numbers for health and enjoyment to the watering-places of the coast from every part of the kingdom miss, as it seems to the author - saving a few of them - some of the pleasure their wanderings should bring them. There was, indeed, an initial difficulty in the writing of this book. Where should a limit be fixed for the district to be treated? It must be con fessed that the boundary chosen is in a manner arbitrary, though it is based upon natural configuration; but it was dictated by considerations of space, and to some extent by the convenience with which localities are visited; but ever as the author went westward something attractive beyond seemed to beckon him on, until at length the far-off hills of Richmond would have lured him further still. Book Description
First published in 1996. For most of the time since the Grimm brothers first contrasted the fairy tale (Märchen) and the legend (Sage), the former has enjoyed the greater reputation among folklorists. Only in recent years, and with the work of such scholars as Gillian Bennett and Paul Smith, has it been recognized that—both as art and as news—the legend is now central to contemporary culture in a way that the Märchen no longer is. The present book is the first collection of essays on legend to appear in English since 1971. Nevertheless, its publication consolidates a gradual shift which has taken place over the last two decades, in which English-language scholarship has taken the lead in the study of certain kinds of legends—variously dubbed modern horror legends, urban legends, urban myths or, here, contemporary legends.
