Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise on the Diseases of the Chest: Being a Course of Lectures Delivered at New York Hospital Tas Lectures on the Diseases of the Chest were published ten years since, in the New York Lancet, a weekly medical journal existing at that we. Being delivered extempore, and taken in shorthand, although by that excellent stenographer, the late Dr. Houston, then Editor of the Journal, they contained necessarily many imperfections, which, under other circum stances, might easily have been avoided. Soon after their publication, however, in this informal manner, the author re ceived repeated solicitations from his medical friends, that he wouldnevise the Lectures and publish thomin aseparate volume. This request he has complied with in the volume which he now o 'es's to the medical profession. The whole subject has been carefully revised, and the experience of ten years in Hospiml md in private practice has been added. Most of his protessional life the author has kept a register of the most im portant cases of chest disease that have fallen under his notice. And these have been numerous and ofien highly important. He has used them freely in the preparation of the present wk, and is happy in believing that his statements are founded upon registered and carefully observed facts, rather than upon vague recollections. His own opinions are embodied in the text: the opinions of authors, as well as such statistical informa. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Lectures on Fever: Delivered in the Memphis Medical College, in 1853-6 The student of medicine is expected to inform him self in regard to the character of the prominent hy potheses which have been published; but the natural effect upon the minds of those who are in pursuit of truth is, to impress them with the uncertainty which must ever attend upon the most able and ingenious, founded in any degree up'on assumed data. It is be cause of this unsubstantial basis that so large a num her have been promulgated upon this subject. Each has had its adherents, who were ready to subscribe to every assumption, and every dogma; and the dura. Tion of one seems to have been limited only by the appearance of another to take its place. As each in its turn has occupied the attention, and secured the confidence of the profession, it has required consider able moral courage to question its soundness but you may safely consider, that what has been written in explanation of fever hitherto is merely hypothetic; and you will do well to believe, that theories in med icine, as in other branches of science, must always be founded upon well-established facts, without which they are not entitled to confidence. Book Description
At first sight it may appear strange that a volume of Progress in Pediatric Surgery should be devoted to the history of our specialty. One assumes that progress is concerned primarily with recent developments whilst history deals with matters of the past. However, in the past there has also been considerable progress in the development of our understand ing of paediatric surgical problems, otherwise we would not have pro gressed to our present achievements. The editors, therefore, do not apologize for compiling this volume but, on the contrary, feel that the publication of this volume is most timely. Modern paediatric surgery has now been practised for three genera tions. The handful of pioneers who were the founders of our specialty worked mainly before the last world war. A few dozen of the inter mediary generation started work immediately after the war, while the new generation who are now dominating our specialty must be counted in thousands. Two factors have radically altered paediatric surgery as practised by the intermediary and the present generation of surgeons.
