Les changements du monde rural, en particulier en France, sont aujourd’hui bien connus. Si la campagne agricole a longuement façonné la société française, « l’agricole » ne fait plus « le rural » : le rural est devenu résidentiel, récréatif, et son caractère d’espace naturel est largement reconsidéré. La question de la gestion des espaces ruraux est donc posée. Le rural est-il un espace intégré dépendant de la ville ? Doit-il – ou peut-il – être gouverné comme tel ? Les spécificités du rural doivent-elles au contraire engendrer des finalités différentes, entre efficacité et équité territoriale ? Les mutations des espaces ruraux et l’évolution de la gouvernance obligent à repenser l’analyse économique de ces espaces. L’économie rurale n’est plus seulement une branche de l’analyse économique qui s’intéresserait à l’agriculture, à l’agroalimentaire et à l’espace dit « rural ». En effet, elle s’est ouverte aux concepts et aux méthodes de l’économie spatiale et régionale, de l’économie de l’environnement, de l’économie néo-institutionnelle, de l’économie publique, de l’économie politique. Ces apports ont permis de renouveler les méthodes et les cadres d’analyse, illustrés par les travaux et les réflexions livrés dans cet ouvrage. Repenser l’économie rurale, c’est appréhender le rural, objet désectorialisé, comme un terrain d’application remarquable pour un ensemble d’approches variées. C’est aussi tracer des perspectives pour la recherche, à partir de questionnements aussi bien au plan local que global.
