Ce travail vise à décrire les traits phonétiques du parler de l'archipel dans une optique comparative et à étudier la variation inter- (et intra-) individuelle de quelques variables choisies afin de situer le français des Iles-de-la-Madeleine par rapport aux autres variétés du français en Amérique du Nord. Quoique les Iles-de-la-Madeleine fassent partie de la province du Québec sur le plan politique, la population, de majorité francophone, montre une forte identification avec ses origines acadiennes. Elle affirme nettement son caractère acadien, dans un paysage linguistique diversifié, consciente d'appartenir à une "société distincte" qui se différencie aussi bien des Québécois que des Canadiens anglophones. L'analyse est basée sur un corpus entièrement informatisé de 12 heures d'entretiens semi-dirigés. Le rapprochement de traits phonétiques et de traits morphologiques permet de constater que l'érosion des traits acadiens ne se fait pas au même rythme pour tous les phénomènes. Une évolution "à deux vitesses" comme nous l'avons observée pour le parler des Iles-de-la-Madeleine témoigne d'une tension inhérente qui caractérise ce parler. Afin de traiter dans toute sa complexité la dynamique induite par la pression de la norme endogène d'un côté et de la désacadianisation sous l'influence de l'appareil institutionnel québécois de l'autre, nous avons opté pour une approche pluridimensionnelle intégrant les acquis de la linguistique variationniste et des recherches contemporaines en linguistique cognitive (rapport entre perception et production, rôle de la fréquence)

Twelve illustrations from regions as far removed as Western Canada and Central Africa represent widely divergent social contexts of language use. Each chapter is based on original surveys conducted within the framework of the Phonology of Contemporary French project, described in the Introduction.
