L'analyse quantitative révèle une structuration nette dans la variation linguistique, se mani- festant à travers une série de variables phonétiques qui recoupent les principaux traits de la prononciation acadienne traditionnelle. La démarche permet ainsi de caractériser l'évolution et l'état actuel du parler. La variation géographique s'ajoute à la variation sociale, et les deux dimensions sont explorées en relation étroite avec l'histoire et les conditions socio-économiques de la communauté. Rédigée à la suite d'un séjour de cinq ans dans la région où a été menée l'enquête, cette étude se base sur une connaissance directe du milieu et est marquée d'une sympathie profonde pour les problèmes et les aspirations de la communauté acadienne.

This book is a detailed study of French-English linguistic borrowing in Prince Edward Island, Canada which argues for the centrality of lexical innovation to grammatical change. Chapters 1–4 present the theoretical and methodological perspectives adopted along with the sociolinguistic history of Acadian French. Chapter 5 outlines the basic features of Acadian French morphosyntax. Chapter 6 provides an overview of the linguistic consequences of language contact in Prince Edward Island. Chapters 7–9 consider three particular cases of grammatical borrowing: the borrowing of the English adverb back and the semantic and syntactic reanalysis it has undergone, the borrowing of a wide range of English prepositions, resulting in dramatic changes in the syntactic behaviour of French prepositions, and the borrowing of English wh-ever words, resulting in the emergence of a new type of free relative. Chapter 10 argues for a theory of grammar contact by which contact-induced grammatical change is mediated by the lexicon.

Studies on the interaction of languages are gaining importance in today's world, which is characterized by accelerated migration and increasing cultural exchange. In contrast to most research in this field, which concentrates on one embedded language against a matrix language, Gergely Tóth examines the linguistic behaviors in two immigrant speech communities, German and Hungarian, against the background of English.
