Book Description
Updated and available for the first time in English, Mafia Inc. reveals how the Rizzuto clan built their Canadian empire through force and corruption, alliances and compromises, and turned it into one of the most powerful criminal organizations in North America. Relying on extensive court documents, police sources and sources in the family's home village in Sicily, Montréal journalists André Cédilot and André Noël reconstruct the history of the Rizzuto clan, and expose how its business extends throughout Canada and the world, shaping the criminal underworld, influencing politicians and bending the will of business leaders to their own self-satisfying ends.

Book Description
Rains and Teram trace the history, impact, and subversion of public policies affecting the disposition of delinquent, neglected, and emotionally disturbed anglophone youth in Montreal. They examine these policies through study of the more than eighty-year history of The Boys' Farm, now known as Shawbridge Youth Centres, and the strategies it used to control admissions in the face of changing relations with other organizations in Montreal's delinquency, child welfare, and mental health networks. The authors describe the surprisingly direct efforts to increase the supply of reformable "normal bad boys" at the turn of the century; the beginnings, around mid-century, of the "differential treatment" ideology that eventually legitimized institutional control over admissions; and the more recent child-welfare environment that emphasised professional self-regulation and organizational autonomy. The final section of the book is a contemporary case study of Montreal's anglophone youth protection network in the wake of the implementation in 1979 of the Quebec Youth Protection Act.

Book Description
The first major reference work of its kind in the social welfare field in Canada, this volume is a selected bibliography of works on Canadian social welfare policy. The entries in Part One treat general aspects of the origins, development, organization, and administration of the welfare state in Canada; included is a section covering basic statistical sources. The entries in Part Two treat particular areas of policy such as unemployment, disabled persons, prisons, child and family welfare, health care, and day care. Also included are an introductory essay reviewing the literature on social welfare policy in Canada, a "User's Guide," several appendices on archival materials, and an extensive chronology of Canadian social welfare legislation both federal and provincial. The volume will increase the accessibility of literature on the welfare state and stimulate increased awareness and further research. It should be of wide interest to students, researchers, librarians, social welfare policy analysts and administrators, and social work practitioners.
