Est-elle suffisante alors que le médecin doit se positionner face à un patient qui peut prendre un risque vital, mettant en jeu son avenir ? En se fondant sur sa pratique quotidienne dans une unité d’hémodialyse chronique, l’auteur montre combien le suivi d’un traitement lourd et contraignant nécessite la collaboration entre le médecin et son patient. Celui-ci déterminera seul sa volonté après avoir été informé des obstacles à surmonter, des difficultés à résister à l’épreuve du temps. Toutefois, sa décision dépend aussi pour beaucoup de la nature de sa rencontre avec le médecin. Bien sûr, cette rencontre est celle de deux personnes dont l’une est dotée de compétences pour répondre à la souffrance de l’autre. Mais il s’agit surtout d’une rencontre toujours singulière, qui devrait allier à chaque fois reconnaissance, dialogue et délibération. C’est l’attitude marquée de sollicitude du médecin qui peut aider le patient à exprimer et mettre en œuvre sa volonté, la finalité étant qu’il puisse vivre avec et malgré la maladie. Cet ouvrage invite les professionnels, les patients et leurs proches à construire et entretenir une relation fondée sur la délibération et le dialogue, à être réellement en présence l’un à l’autre afin d’ouvrir à la vie au-delà de la maladie.
