Les traitements anticancéreux peuvent occasionner de nombreux effets indésirables aux patients traités par ces traitements. Afin de soulages ces effets néfastes, ces derniers se tournent de plus en plus vers la médecine complémentaire sans forcément en connaître les produits. L'objectif de ce travail est d'aider ces patients à soulager les symptômes causés par la chimiothérapie, de manière sûre (sans interaction avec les traitements pris par les patients), avec des produits issus de médecine complémentaire. Nous avons tout d'abord détaillé les différentes classes thérapeutiques utilisées en oncologie ainsi que leur mode d'action, leurs principaux effets indésirables ainsi que les facteurs de risques favorisant leur survenue et les molécules utilisées pour les soulager. La notion de médecine complémentaire a été définie et nous avons choisi de développer trois thérapeutiques régulièrement utilisées : l'homéopathie, la phytothérapie et l'aromathérapie. Le principe de chacune de ces thérapeutiques a été présenté ainsi que leur toxicité et leurs éventuelles interactions. Par la suite, nous avons réalisé quatre fiches conseils à l'intention des patients portant chacune sur un effet indésirable fréquent : les nausées et vomissements, l'anxiété, les mucites et les diarrhées. Pour chaque effet indésirable, des produits issus des trois thérapeutiques complémentaires sont proposés. Ces fiches pourront donc être utilisées par les équipes soignants du service d'oncologie médicale de l'Hôpital Edouard Herriot dans un premier temps, puis servir en pharmacie d'officine dans le cadre des entretiens anticancéreux.

Durant ces dernières années, l'utilisation de médecine complémentaire a augmenté et particulièrement chez les patients atteints de cancer. Les raisons de cette utilisation sont mal connues et la place de la relation médecin – patient dans la prise de ces médecines non définie. Un questionnaire anonyme a été remis à la disposition de patients volontaires suivis ou traités dans un service de cancérologie à Paris. Il s'agissait d'une étude descriptive sur une durée de 10 semaines. Un total de 207 questionnaires a été collecté, 195 questionnaires ont pu être exploités. Trente-quatre pour cent des patients utilisaient de la médecine complémentaire. L'homéopathie, les plantes et les vitamines étaient les substances les plus utilisées. L'acupuncture et les massages étaient les techniques les plus représentées. Aucun profil type de l'utilisateur de médecine complémentaire n'a pu être mis en évidence. La principale raison de cette utilisation n'était pas de guérir le cancer mais de soulager les effets secondaires du traitement conventionnel. Cinquante-sept pour cent des utilisateurs de médecine complémentaire ne révélaient pas cette utilisation au cancérologue parce que ce dernier n'avait jamais posé de questions sur les autres thérapies en dehors du traitement conventionnel. Il est donc primordial que l'oncologue initie un dialogue avec le patient au sujet de la médecine complémentaire afin de l'informer d'éventuels effets secondaires ou d'interactions avec le traitement suivi en fonction du type de thérapie utilisée. Cette information au patient ne peut qu'améliorer la relation de confiance instaurée entre le cancérologue et son patient
