La Enfermedad de Injerto contra Huésped (EICH), es una complicación, que ocurre en pacientessometidos a un trasplante alogénico. Entre un 40-90% de los pacientes con EICH presentanafectación ocular, caracterizada principalmente por un síndrome de ojo seco severo. En un12,8% de los pacientes sometidos a trasplantes alogénicos aparecen complicaciones delsegmento posterior del ojo. No se conoce con exactitud si son debidas a la EICH ocular(EICHo) o a otras causas, como la irradiación corporal total (TBI) o el uso de ciclosporina. Porotro lado, se ha visto que el uso de células stem mesenquimales (CSM) extraídas de la médulaósea (MO) puede convertirse en una alternativa para el tratamiento de la afectación corneal en laEICHo, pero es importante conocer si estas células se restringen a esta localización o migranhacia la retina, lo que podría ser un factor de riesgo en el tratamiento de la EICHo.Los objetivos de esta tesis son: evaluar, en un modelo animal de EICHo, la posible afectacióndel segmento posterior del ojo debido a la EICHo, la TBI o al trasplante de medula ósea yanalizar si las CSM humanas inyectadas a nivel subconjuntival son capaces de migrar a la retinay afectar a la misma. Para generar el modelo animal de EICHo los ratones receptores BALB/C (H2d) fueronsometidos a una TBI y después realizamos un trasplante de médula ósea y esplenocitos deratones donantes C57BL/6. Caracterizamos y puntuamos las alteraciones macroscópicasoculares. Realizamos un estudio de la osmolaridad de la película lagrimal. Obtuvimos CSMhumanas de donantes sanos y se inyectaron subconjuntivalmente en ratones. Por último,realizamos estudios de inmunohistoquímica de fluorescencia en las retinas. Los animales a los que se les había generado EICHo presentaban signos clínicos de EICH enpárpados, conjuntiva y córnea, asociado a un aumento de osmolaridad de la película lagrimal.No se encontraron signos de inflamación y apoptosis a nivel retiniano, ni alteraciones en célulasneurales, astrocitos y células de Müller, ni vasculares que se puedan atribuir a la EICHo. Sinembargo, existe un aumento de la población de la microglía y un cambio en su morfología quese podría atribuir a los efectos de la TBI y del trasplante de MO. Por otra parte, no hemoslocalizado migración de CSM hacia la retina tras su inyección por vía subconjuntival.La inyección subconjuntival de CSM es una opción segura para el tratamiento de la EICHo anivel de la córnea ya que se restringen a esta localización y no migran hacia la retina. Lasalteraciones en las poblaciones neuronales y en la vascularización de la retina en la EICHo soninexistentes o muy leves, como para ser capaces de atraer a las CSM hacia ella.

I Twenty-five years ago, at the Conference on the Comparative Reception of Darwinism held at the University of Texas in 1972, only two countries of the Iberian world-Spain and Mexico-were represented.' At the time, it was apparent that the topic had attracted interest only as regarded the "mainstream" science countries of Western Europe, plus the United States. The Eurocentric bias of professional history of science was a fact. The sea change that subsequently occurred in the historiography of science makes 1972 appear something like the antediluvian era. Still, we would like to think that that meeting was prescient in looking beyond the mainstream science countries-as then perceived-in order to test the variation that ideas undergo as they pass from center to periphery. One thing that the comparative study of the reception of ideas makes abundantly clear, however, is the weakness of the center/periphery dichotomy from the perspective of the diffusion of scientific ideas. Catholics in mainstream countries, for example, did not handle evolution much better than did their corre1igionaries on the fringes. Conversely, Darwinians in Latin America were frequently better placed to advance Darwin's ideas in a social and political sense than were their fellow evolutionists on the Continent. The Texas meeting was also a marker in the comparative reception of scientific ideas, Darwinism aside. Although, by 1972, scientific institutions had been studied comparatively, there was no antecedent for the comparative history of scientific ideas.
