Vivienne Brough-Evans proposes a compelling new way of reevaluating aspects of international surrealism by means of the category of divin fou, and consequently deploys theories of sacred ecstasy as developed by the Collège de Sociologie (1937–39) as a critical tool in shedding new light on the literary oeuvre of non-French writers who worked both within and against a surrealist framework. The minor surrealist genre of prose literature is considered herein, rather than surrealism's mainstay, poetry, with the intention of fracturing preconceptions regarding the medium of surrealist expression. The aim is to explore whether International surrealism can begin to be more fully explained by an occluded strain of 'dissident' surrealist thought that searches outside the self through the affects of ekstasis. Bretonian surrealism is widely discussed in the field of surrealist studies, and there is a need to consider what is left out of surrealist practice when analysed through this Bretonian lens. The Collège de Sociologie and Georges Bataille's theories provide a model of such elements of 'dissident' surrealism, which is used to analyse surrealist or surrealist influenced prose by Alejo Carpentier, Leonora Carrington and Gellu Naum respectively representing postcolonial, feminist and Balkan locutions. The Collège and Bataille's 'dissident' surrealism diverges significantly from the concerns and approach towards the subject explored by surrealism. Using the concept of ekstasis to organise Bataille's theoretical ideas of excess and 'inner experience' and the Collège's thoughts on the sacred it is possible to propose a new way of reading types of International surrealist literature, many of which do not come to the forefront of the surrealist literary oeuvre.

While the origin of trans-pacific contact between Asia and the New World can be traced as far back as the pre-Columbian period, it was not until the fifteenth century that communication across the Pacific became constant. Despite this history, the myriad encounters that constitute the basic contours of transpacific studies have often been overshadowed by the traditional emphasis on transatlantic studies. In addition, although socio-political ties between Asia and Latin America have drawn attention among politicians and economists in recent years, there continues to be a critical void in the studies of literary, cultural, and historical relations between the two regions. This book challenges this double negligence, and engages in a global discussion about the relationship between Asia and the Hispanic world, which includes not only Spanish America, but also the Philippines under the Spanish empire. The essays presented in this volume explore the multidimensional nature of the trans-pacific intersection through historical studies, as well as literary and cultural criticism. Topics investigated include, for example, the overlooked aspect of the Hispanic Philippines, the “Orientalized” images of Latin American colonial art, modernista and vanguardista writings about India, and the experience of a Peruvian migrant worker in contemporary Japan. The diverse perspectives that the authors offer create a dialogue with each other, and together provide an interdisciplinary approach to the understanding of trans-pacific encounters, both past and present.

This book reconsiders the body in literature and makes a case for visual representation as a physical and gesticulative domain for rethinking the constructions of gender, nationalism and sexuality. Examining literary production from the eleventh century until the present, the author argues that the body in contemporary North Africa and Latin America serves as a physical and symbolic terrain upon which sexual, textual, national, racial and linguistic identities are vectored and through which postcolonial and hegemonic antagonisms of power and identity are resolved. Rather than embracing «third world» identity as a residual repository of western thought, colonization and linguistic infusion, the author suggests that the paradigm of cultural identity in the Maghreb and Latin America is best understood through an examination of the emergent corporeal articulations of subjectivity prevalent in these literatures and visual cultures. The text examines the body as a critical landscape through which the various discourses of nationhood, gender and sexuality converge in order to construct a reading of the social that neither amasses subjectivity as singular under the rubric of the «third world», nor couches the other within static notions of gendered, sexual or racial identities.
