Book Description
Acidification is one of the most serious environmental problems - especially in Sweden, which suffers most from the consequences of acid rain. Besides international negotiations to reduce sulphur emissions - 85% of the acid load on Sweden can be traced to emissions from outside the country itself - the Swedish Government has employed large-scale, operative liming activities to counteract acidification of surface waters. The scientific results show that - although acidification cannot be solved by liming alone - the measures taken resulted in substantial improvements to around 8,000 Swedish lakes and watercourses. The idea is that other countries affected by acidification may also profit from this experience.

Book Description
This 1991 volume presents the results of a major study of the mechanism and consequences of surface water acidification. It provides an overview of the chemical process involved in acidification and of its biological impact on freshwater life. The surface waters acidification programme (SWAP) has drawn together the many facets of this complex phenomenon.

Book Description
LES MECANISMES D'ACIDIFICATION DES SOLS ET DES RUISSEAUX DES ECOSYSTEMES FORESTIERS SONT ETUDIES EN EUROPE DEPUIS 30 ANS POUR ETABLIR LEUR SENSIBILITE AUX DEPOTS ATMOSPHERIQUES ACIDES SUSCEPTIBLES D'Y PROVOQUER DES DOMMAGES. CETTE SENSIBILITE DEFINIT UNE CHARGE CRITIQUE EGALE A LA QUANTITE DE DEPOTS ATMOSPHERIQUES ACCEPTABLE POUR UN ECOSYSTEME. CETTE ETUDE ABORDE SUCCESSIVEMENT (1) LES TENDANCES DE L'ACIDIFICATION DES SOLS ET DES EAUX DANS LES REGIONS FRANCAISES SENSIBLES, (2) LA QUANTIFICATION DE L'ALTERATION DES SOLS, DES ARENES ET DES ROCHES QUI NEUTRALISE L'ACIDITE, (3) LE CALCUL ET LA CARTOGRAPHIE DES CHARGES CRITIQUES D'ACIDITE. POUR ABORDER CES CALCULS ON MANQUE DE DONNEES ET LES METHODES UTILISEES EN EUROPE SONT PEU ADAPTEES A LA VARIETE DES ECOSYSTEMES FRANCAIS. UNE ETUDE DES MILIEUX NATURELS FRANCAIS SELON LEUR SENSIBILITE A L'ACIDIFICATION, A DONC ETE ENGAGEE. LES RELATIONS ENTRE LA CHIMIE DES EAUX ET L'ALTERATION DES SOLS ONT ETE ETABLIES POUR QUELQUES REGIONS : VOSGES, ARDENNES ET MASSIF CENTRAL. L'ETUDE A ETE MENEE A PLUSIEURS ECHELLES : STATION, BASSIN VERSANT, MASSIF MONTAGNEUX, PUIS TERRITOIRE NATIONAL, POUR UNE INTEGRATION DES DONNEES EN EUROPE. LES RELATIONS PH-ALCALINITE DES EAUX DE RUISSEAU SONT MODELISEES. ELLES MONTRENT DES CHANGEMENTS D'ALCALINITE ET DES PERTES DE POUVOIR TAMPON SPECIFIQUES A CHAQUE REGION. L'ALTERATION EST QUANTIFIEE AVEC LE MODELE PROFILE D'APRES LA MINERALOGIE DES SOLS ETABLIE A PARTIR D'ANALYSES CHIMIQUES TOTALES. LES RESULTATS DE 12 PLACETTES DU RESEAU RENECOFOR SONT MODELISES, PUIS ETENDUS A LA FRANCE AVEC LES DONNEES DES 102 PLACETTES DE CE RESEAU. ENFIN, LES CHARGES CRITIQUES SONT CALCULEES ET CARTOGRAPHIEES. DIFFERENTES MODALITES SONT COMPAREES POUR DETERMINER LES INCERTITUDES RESIDUELLES. UNE CARTE D'ALTERATION DES SOLS ET DES ROCHES POUR LA FRANCE, PUIS DES CHARGES CRITIQUES D'ACIDITE, EST REALISEE POUR LA PREMIERE FOIS EN FRANCE A CE NIVEAU DE DETAIL.

Book Description
Practical Guide to Managing Acidic Surface Waters and Their Fisheries explains how to manage acidic surface waters to preserve or restore fisheries. The work gives readers the basic tools to carry out a variety of surface water management activities. Topics include biological productivity and recovery, costs of liming, fish stocking, lake liming techniques, nutrients, regulations and permits, sampling, stream liming techniques, water quality analysis, and watershed liming techniques. The book will be a useful reference for fishing club managers, state and local government personnel, lake association managers, and others responsible for maintaining lakes and streams that may be affected by acidity from any source.

Book Description
The causes and consequences of acid rain are subjects of widespread concern and controversy. However the effects of acid deposition on the chemistry of lakes and streams, and on the survival of fish and other aquatic life, have been greatly clarified by the results of a recent Anglo-Scandinavian surface waters research program. This book presents a concise, nonspecialist account of the results and their implications by the director of the program. Based on studies conducted throughout the United Kingdom and northern Europe, the book includes chapters on emissions, transport, and deposition of acid pollution; hydrochemical studies in catchments; catchment process studies; catchment manipulation experiments; the role of hydrology and soil chemistry; palaeolimnological studies; the toxic effects of acidification on fish and other aquatic life; and catchment modelling studies. The highly interdisciplinary nature of the research should appeal to a wide range of scientists and to policy-makers interested in acid rain and its consequences. It is also aimed at postgraduates and third-year undergraduate students in the environmental sciences.
