Book Description
Natural toxins are toxic compounds that are naturally produced by living organisms. These toxins are not harmful to the organisms themselves, but they may be toxic to other creatures, including humans, when eaten. These chemical compounds have diverse structures and differ in biological function and toxicity. Some toxins are produced by plants as a natural defense mechanism against predators, insects, or microorganisms, or as a consequence of infestation with microorganisms, such as mold, in response to climate stress (such as drought or extreme humidity). Well-known groups of natural toxins of plant origin are: cyanogenic glycosides, pyrrolizidine alkaloids, furocoumarins, lectins, and glycoalkaloids. These plant-origin natural toxins can cause a variety of adverse health effects and pose a serious health threat to both humans and livestock. Analysis of Naturally Occurring Food Toxins of Plant Origin is divided into three sections that provide a detailed overview of different classes of food toxins that are naturally found in plants, including various analytical techniques used for their structural characterization, identification, detection, and quantification. This book provides in-depth information and comprehensive discussion over quantitative and qualitative analysis of natural toxins in plant-based foods. Key Features: • Provides a detailed overview of different classes of natural toxins found in plants. • Explains how IR, NMR, and mass spectrometry are utilized in characterization and identification. • Describes applicability of HPLC, LC-MS, GC-MS, and HPTLC techniques for detection and quantification. • Discusses progress in the field related to capillary electrophoresis, ELISA, and biosensors for quantitative application of these techniques. Book Description
Feeding the world's growing human population is increasingly challenging, especially as more people adopt a western diet and lifestyle. Doing so without causing damage to nature poses an even greater challenge. This book argues that in order to create a sustainable food supply whilst conserving nature, agriculture and nature must be reconnected and approached together. The authors demonstrate that while the links between nature and food production have, to some extent, already been recognized, until now the focus has been to protect one from the impacts of the other. Instead, it is argued that nature and agriculture can, and should, work together and ultimately benefit from one another. Chapters describe efforts to protect nature through globally connected protected area systems and illustrate how farming methods are being shaped to protect nature within agricultural systems. The authors also point to many ways in which nature benefits agriculture through the ecosystem services it provides. Overall, the book shows that nature conservation and food production must be considered as equally important components of future solutions to meet the global demand for food in a manner that is sustainable for both the human population and the planet as a whole.

Book Description
This book uses a historical and modern lens to reimagine the role that Extension could potentially play in catalyzing reciprocal, co-learning relationships between Land-Grant Universities and their diverse local constituencies. The establishment of statewide extension systems was once seen as a way to ensure that Land-Grant Universities would be accessible and responsive to all of a state’s residents. Extension systems continue to offer a front-door to a major public university in almost every county of the United States, but they tend to be viewed primarily as a way to translate science or distribute information from the university to the public. This books argues for the importance of Extension and shows that we are conceiving of this system too narrowly. Only by retelling the stories of the Extension and getting people to see themselves as part of the story can we imagine a different future in which state universities and land-grant colleges engage more authentically and equitably in two-way relationships with their local constituents.in catalyzing reciprocal, co-learning relationships between Land-Grant Universities and their diverse local constituencies. Chapter “Palatable disruption: the politics of plant milk", chapter “Feeding the melting pot: inclusive strategies for the multi-ethnic city", chapter "A carrot isn't a carrot isn't a carrot: tracing value in alternative practices of food exchange", chapter “Virtualizing the 'good life': reworking narratives of agrarianism and the rural idyll in a computer game" and chapter "'Workable utopias' for social change through inclusion and empowerment? Community supported agriculture (CSA) in Wales as social innovation" are available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license via link.springer.com.
