Book Description
With extensive, step-by-step photographs and instructions, this jiu-jitsu guide is an effective tool for mastering this ancient martial art. The original Japanese martial art developed by the elite samurai class during Japan's feudal era, Jiu-jitsu is the forerunner of Judo and the precursor of today's ultimate fighting styles, such as mixed martial arts (MMA). For centuries, this method of unarmed self-defense proved so successful in combat that it was kept secret and taught only to a select few. Based on the author's study with instructors at the Tokyo police academy, this martial arts book presents all the traditional techniques of Jujitsu, also known as Jiu-jitsu. These techniques teach you valuable restraining methods that force your opponent to submit without abuse by using pressure points. It shows you tips for search and seizure, and the almost extinct art of Hojojutsu—how to tie people up without using any knots. Japanese Jiu-jitsu: Secret Techniques of Self-Defense addresses and demonstrates the full range of Kaisho Goshin Budo Taiho Jitsu Ryu (Tokyo police self-defense). Learn specific techniques such as: The use of hands Throwing an opponent Attacking vital points with strikes and kicks The use of weapons (like the staff). This fascinating Jiujitsu book, designed as a training manual, also serves as a remarkable illustrated guide to the secret art of Japanese samurai self-defense.

Book Description
What are the origins of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? Is it merely a by-product--a rebel offspring--of Judo? What was the nature and content of the art that Mitsuyo Maeda, a.k.a. "Count Koma", and other Japanese were teaching in the Amazon? Was it Judo? Jiu-Jitsu? His own personal fight-tested style, built on a foundation of Judo and informed by his dozens and dozens of matches around the world? What was the bridge between the art he learned at the Kodokan and the Brazilian style that claims him as its godfather: a style now practiced by millions worldwide (and growing bigger every day)? Should Maeda even be at the center of this story? And what role did Carlos and Hélio Gracie play in all of this? Did they "invent" BJJ? Would BJJ exist without them? And, if so, what--if anything--did they create? And why does this history matter to the average BJJ practitioner today? Any history possesses its official narrative with its own favorite characters and events. But true history is seldom simple, and more oft than not the real story is far richer than the popular version that is widely repeated and handed down. The history of BJJ and MMA in Brazil doesn't escape this paradigm. The recent renaissance in research in regards to the history of martial arts in Brazil led to the author's curiosity, which in turn led to the documentary Closed-Guard: The Origins of Jiu-Jitsu in Brazil, which in turn led to this book. This manuscript started as an account of the author's recollections of the film's production, and quickly grew into much more. Opening Closed Guard: The Story Behind the Film contains conclusions, analysis, and historical interpretations, as well as the story behind the documentary itself and the many challenges it faced along the way. It contains interviews, research articles pertaining to the history of Jiu-Jitsu in Brazil, as well as the author's own take on the current state of BJJ and MMA. Finally, it is the story of the author rediscovering his love for Jiu-Jitsu in a completely new and unexpected way. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Born in the US from a Brazilian mother and American father, and having spent his life between these two countries, Robert Drysdale remains the only American competitor to have ever won both the IBJJF and ADCC World Championships, the two most prestigious tournaments in all of Jiu-Jitsu. Furthermore, he has also cultivated a career in MMA, both as a fighter and as a coach. The author also holds a Bachelor's Degree in History, as well as a long-held passion for this discipline. He lives in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he teaches Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA. He is also the co-founder of the international team Zenith Jiu-Jitsu, and is the father of two girls.

Book Description
A renowned kickboxer steps into the ring to face off with the first man in his country to assert that Jiu Jitsu is superior to all other martial arts. The bout is over in 26 seconds when the Jiu Jitsu man applies an armbar. No, this isn't the mid 1990's we're talking about: This matchup took place in Paris nearly a century before! In 1905 the Jiu Jitsu professor Re Nié, having been classically trained in Japan, went head-to-head with Master-at-arms Georges Dubois, head of security at the Paris Opera. Dubois was an ardent sportsman, powerful from his weight training regimen, and skilled in boxing as well as savate - in short an all around tough nut and a skeptic when it came to the mystique behind eastern martial arts. All he managed to do was throw a low kick, and then he was down and out, submitting before his elbow snapped. The five hundred or so sports journalists were dumbstruck by what they had witnessed.Indeed, there is nothing new under the sun. Dubois went on to study the Japanese art of locks and strangleholds, and even incorporated them into his book How to Defend Yourself. While Jiu Jitsu did find a wide and steady following, its popularity simmered in the background for another ninety years, when all at once televised tournaments brought its power before the eyes of millions, and now there is no fighter worthy of the name who has not mastered the armbar and the triangle choke. When professor Re Nié set forth the fundamentals of his technique under the title of The Secrets of Jiu Jitsu, he was a pioneer - but only in the West. In Japan, this jealously guarded secret art of the samurai had been practised for centuries, and maintained in a form that suited warriors: A lean, mean, intelligent, violent, and almost perfect method whereby a smaller man can defeat a larger man through tactics, physiological knowledge, and that terrible weapon known as leverage.
