Author: Matt Carmichael
Publisher: Palgrave Macmillan
ISBN: 1137401249
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 236
Book Description
Author Matt Carmichael has been tracking demographic shifts for years, and provides a data-rich look at the changing American consumer. This book follows ten families in ten representative counties to examine their lives and how the decisions they make impact consumer behavior. This is not just a data book, because in the end each of those numbers—in datasets big and small—is a person. As you read those stories, the trends come to life and give you a greater understanding of how to reach your target—whether it’s a baby boomer farmer in Teton, Montana or a set of working parents in one of the most affluent counties in the US. Carmichael focuses on the top ten trends that are reshaping the consumer landscape and impacting buying behavior and the economic outlook of the world’s most important market. For each trend he provides ethnographic research from the families, stats from the leading consumer data sources, and exclusive interviews and examples from marketers, agencies, and media executives. These trends show how America is aging, growing more diverse ethnically, and becoming more polarized economically. Buyographics is a smart, engaging read that will be important for every marketer to consider before creating a successful campaign.

Book Description
Seventeen-year-old Vanessa Sands is afraid of everything -- the dark, heights, the ocean -- but her fearless older sister, Justine, has always been there to coach her through every challenge. That is until Justine goes cliff diving one night near the family's vacation house in Winter Harbor, Maine, and her lifeless body washes up on shore the next day. Vanessa's parents want to work through the tragedy by returning to their everyday lives back in Boston, but Vanessa can't help feeling that her sister's death was more than an accident. After discovering that Justine never applied to colleges, and that she was secretly in a relationship with longtime family friend Caleb Carmichael, Vanessa returns to Winter Harbor to seek some answers. But when Vanessa learns that Caleb has been missing since Justine's death, she and Caleb's older brother, Simon, join forces to try to find him, and in the process, their childhood friendship blossoms into something more. Soon it's not just Vanessa who is afraid. All of Winter Harbor is abuzz with anxiety when another body washes ashore, and panic sets in when the small town becomes home to a string of fatal, water-related accidents... in which all the victims are found grinning from ear to ear. As Vanessa and Simon probe further into the connections between Justine's death and the sudden rash of creepy drownings, Vanessa uncovers a secret that threatens her new romance, and that will change her life forever.

Claiming Place
Author: Marion Kilson
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 0313065071
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 206
Book Description
Born in the 1960s, the middle-class Biracial Americans of this study are part of a transitional cohort between the hidden biracial generations of the past and the visible blended generations of the future. As individuals, they have variously dealt with their ambiguous status in American society; as a generation, they share common existential realities in relation to White culture. During the last decade of the 20th century public awareness of mixed race Americans increased significantly, in no small part because there has been a substantial increase in interracial marriages and offspring since 1960. This study, based on ethnographic interviews, provides an historical overview of the study of Biracial Americans in the social sciences, a sociological profile of project participants, sociocultural discussions of family and race as well as racial identity choices, and examinations of racial realities in adult lives and of recurrent systemic and personal life themes. The textual part of the book demonstrates the diversity of perception and experience regarding race and identity of these biracial young adults. The Epilogue not only reviews major findings pertaining to this transitional generation of Biracial Americans but discusses biraciality and the deconstruction of race in contemporary American society. An extensive bibliography of popular and scholarly sources concludes the book.

Soul Consciousness
Author: Stephen Vick
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1543467946
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 196
Book Description
“This book, these people—these lives—come together to form a loving tribute to all of us in search of deeper meaning, deeper connection, and a deeper sense of wonder. If you read it closely, it will change you.” “Soul Consciousness is a book that will remind you, in this era of political fecklessness and amorality, where our most potent power as a people truly resides.” -Sam Chaltain, Author, “Our School”, Washington DC “Real leadership is transformational! In Soul Consciousness, Vick tells the story of transformational leaders who have learned how to bridge their own soul journeys with the sacred work of empowering others. He shows why we must all be connected to an energy greater than ourselves, and how that energy can help to fuel the brighter world so many of us seek. This book holds the keys to a deeper, more inclusive, and more vibrant world.” -Ryan Lugalia-Hollon, Author, The War on Neighborhoods “This remarkable book offers a blueprint for harnessing the power of community members to enact community change. While many residents, young and old, bend under the weight of deep-seated structural problems, Stephen Vick argues that the answers lie within. Through stories and interviews this book inspires as much as it instructs. A treatise on community empowerment, Soul Consciousness should be required reading for youth workers, community organizers, policy makers, elected officials, and anyone who cares about families and communities.” -Roberto G. Gonzales, Professor of Education, Harvard University and author of Lives in Limbo: Undocumented and Coming of Age in America.

Talking About Race
Author: Steven Grineski
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000981509
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 311
Book Description
What is it that gives many of us White people a visceral fear about discussing race?Do you realize that being able to not think about or talk about it is a uniquely White experience?Do you warn your children about how people might react to them; find store staff following or watching you; get stopped by the police for no reason? The students of color in your classroom experience discrimination every day, in small and large ways. They don’t often see themselves represented in their textbooks, and encounter hostility in school, and outside. For them race is a constant reality, and an issue they need, and want, to discuss. Failure to do so can inhibit their academic performance.Failure to discuss race prevents White students from getting a real, critical and deep understanding of our society and their place in it. It is essential for the well-being of all students that they learn to have constructive conversations about the history of race in this country, the impact of racism on different ethnic communities, and how those communities and cultures contribute to society. The need to model for our students how to talk openly and comfortably about race is critical in America today, but it is still an issue that is difficult to tackle. To overcome the common fear of discussing race, of saying “something wrong”, this book brings together over thirty contributions by teachers and students of different ethnicities and races who offer their experiences, ideas, and advice. With passion and sensitivity they: cover such topics as the development of racial consciousness and identity in children; admit their failures and continuing struggles; write about creating safe spaces and the climate that promotes thoughtful discussion; model self-reflection; demonstrate the importance of giving voice to students; recount how they responded to racial incidents and used current affairs to discuss oppression; describe courses and strategies they have developed; explain the “n” word; present exercises; and pose questions. For any teacher grappling with addressing race in the classroom, and for pre-service teachers confronting their anxieties about race, this book offers a rich resource of insights, approaches and guidance that will allay fears, and provide the reflective practitioner with the confidence to initiate and respond to discussion of race, from the pre-school and elementary classroom through high school.
