Book Description
We are living in puzzling's golden age right now." --Will Shortz, New York Times A colossal assortment of the six most popular Japanese puzzles--Sudoku, Sodoku X, Kakuro, Masyu, Hitori, and Nurikabe--ranging in difficulty from gentle to diabolical. A collection of four hundred puzzles-six different types of mind-bending games-ranging in difficulty levels so that players of every level will be challenged. Features include a complete answer key along with short, illustrated tutorials for each game-which proves particularly useful for the less familiar challenges, including: * Hitori: The ultimate logic teaser. Begin with a complete Sudoku grid and the object is to "paint" out blocks so that no number appears twice in any row or column. * Masyu: A charming but sophisticated invention where you are required to "string" black-and-white "pearls" with a series of vertical and horizontal lines that form a continuous loop. * Nurikabe: Beginning with a grid of squares scattered with numbers seemingly placed at random, the idea is to paint the black squares to make walls, leaving patches of white behind.

Book Description
The vibrant recreational mathematics culture of Japan presents puzzles that are often quite different from the classics of western literature. This book is the first collection of original puzzles by Tadao Kitazawa, a prominent Japanese puzzle-maker. These puzzles, which feature arithmetic, geometry, and combinatorics, are novel, creative, and require almost no formal mathematical knowledge. Kitazawa is particularly skillful in subtly modifying existing ideas to explore their potential to the full. For one example, a Tower Square is a Sudoku-like grid, but each row and column contains one 1, two 2s, three 3s, etc. The resulting transformation of the familiar problem is magical, and it is one of a variety of gems in this book. The common denominator is fun!

Book Description
Many Western commentators have expressed their admiration for the Japanese police system, tracing its origins to the American Occupation of Japan (1945-52). This study challenges the assumptions that underlie these accounts, focusing on the problems that attended the reform of the Japanese police during the Occupation. Drawing on a wide range of primary sources, Christopher Aldous explores the extent to which America failed in it's goal of 'democratizing' the Japanese police force, arguing that deeply-rooted tradition, the pivotal importance of the black market, and the US's decision to opt for an indirect Occupation produced resistance to reform. His study concludes with a consideration of the postwar legacy of the Occupation's police reform, and touches on a number of recent controversies, most notably the case of Aum Shinrikyo.
