Jacob immigrated to the United States ca. 1831 and settled in the Amish community of Somerset Co., Pennsylvania. He married Barbara Miller who was the daughter of Benedict Miller and Catherine Beachy. Jacob and Barbara were the parents of sixteen children. Descendants lived in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Iowa and elsewhere.

A study of the American Mennonite and Amish communities response to the Civil War and the effect t it had upon them. During the American Civil War, the Mennonites and Amish faced moral dilemmas that tested the very core of their faith. How could they oppose both slavery and the war to end it? How could they remain outside the conflict without entering the American mainstream to secure legal conscientious objector status? In the North, living this ethical paradox marked them as ambivalent participants to the Union cause; in the South, it marked them as clear traitors. In the first scholarly treatment of pacifism during the Civil War, two experts in Anabaptist studies explore the important role of sectarian religion in the conflict and the effects of wartime Americanization on these religious communities. Daniel Schwarzentruber (1806-1849) was a son of Vinzenz Schwarzentruber and Christina Gingerich, Mennonites. Daniel and his brother, Chris- tian, immigrated in 1819 from the Palatiante of Germany to Baltimore, Maryland. Daniel married Barbara Hochstetler (of Somerset County, Pennsylvania) and lived first in Maryland, later moving to Somerset County. In 1836 they moved to Holmes County, Ohio. Daniel Swarzen- truber Jr. (1842-1918) was born in Berlin, Ohio, and married four times, moving several times in Ohio and in 1862 to Davis County, Iowa. Descendants and relatives lived in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, California, New York and elsewhere. Some descendants immigrated to Ontario and elsewhere in Canada. Others immigrated to Goias and elsewhere in Brazil, South America. Includes some family history and genealogical data about ancestors in Germany and some in Switzerland to about 1652.
