Book Description
Foreword by Richard Hytner, Deputy Chairman, Saatchi & Saatchi Worldwide We’ve all worked with one—a smart and immensely talented individual who brings enormous value to the organization. The problem? He’s an awful teammate. So as a leader, do you consider this key player toxic or irreplaceable? There Is an I in Team explores the relationship between individual and team—asking the question, How can we harness the talent of individual performers into a cohesive, productive team that creates overall value? And why are so many of our assumptions about teams wrong? Business challenges like this one mimic many of the issues facing sports teams, though admittedly the sports metaphors most commonly used in business are trite and superficial comparisons. What’s needed are real and substantial lessons that managers actually can take from the world of high-performance sports and use in an everyday work environment. This book meets that need. University of Cambridge professor Mark de Rond has combined cutting-edge social and psychological research with rich stories from world-class sports teams, coaches, athletes, and even business executives. The result challenges our most popular notions about teams. Equally critical, it teaches an innovative way to transform team potential into measurable business advantage. You’ll learn: • Why there is an I in team—and why that matters • Why an ideal team is rarely comprised of the best individual performers • Why conflict happens even when intentions are perfectly aligned • Why likability can trump competence even in technically sophisticated environments • Why a focus on interpersonal harmony can actually hurt team performance • Why data and sophisticated statistical tools are unlikely to eliminate the role of intuition At once readable and teachable, There Is an I in Team will strengthen your understanding of the issues that permeate teams of high-performers, and it will help you apply these new insights to your own work—giving you and your team an edge over the competition.

Naming the Father
Author: Eva Paulino Bueno
Publisher: Lexington Books
ISBN: 9780739100929
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 354
Book Description
Naming the Father is a collection of essays on the subject of fatherhood: its enduring power, its secret ruses, its unsettling provocations. Despite the considerable critical attention devoted to motherhood in literature-and despite the late-twentieth-century focus on patriarchy-there is surprisingly no comparable collection on fatherhood. This volume was born of the conclusion that critics of modern and contemporary literature may comprehend the father too little for presuming to have comprehended patriarchy so much. Naming the Father begins with a series of nonfiction essays that attempts to locate the missing father in the individual experiences of three scholars at various stages of their careers. The following thematically grouped sections recover and discuss fatherhood in fields ranging from Caribbean fiction to African American drama and in the work of authors as diverse as Rebecca West, Anzia Yezierska, William Burroughs, and Stephen Wright, as well as Henry James and James Joyce. A variety of critical approaches, from biographical to deconstructive, activate and engage with the cultural, national, and global implications of fatherhood for the family and for the future of literary studies. Scholars and students of contemporary literature, cultural studies, and gender studies will find this book a fascinating and invaluable collection.

Deductive and Object-Oriented Databases
Author: W. Kim
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483298191
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 626
Book Description
Deductive databases and object-oriented databases are at the forefront of research in next-generation intelligent database systems.Object-oriented programming and design methodologies have great potential, promising to reduce the complexity of very large software systems in such domains as computer-aided design and manufacturing, integrated office information systems, and artificial intelligence. Object-oriented database systems will enhance the programmer/user productivity of such systems. Research into deductive databases is aimed at discovering efficient schemes to uniformly represent assertions and deductive rules, and to respond to highly expressive queries against the knowledge base of assertions and rules. This area of research is strongly interacting with Logic Programming which has developed in parallel, sharing Logic as a common basis. Recently, research has aimed at integrating the object-oriented paradigm and rule-based deduction to provide a single powerful framework for intelligent database systems. The aim of this book is to present research papers and technical discussions between researchers concerned with deductive databases, object-oriented databases, and their integration.
