The History of the Irish Newspaper 1685-1760
Author: Robert Munter
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521131162
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 256
Book Description
Dr Munter studies the growth and changing nature of the Irish periodical press from the time of the Protestant Ascendancy under William III to 1760, when provincial papers began to flourish outside Dublin. This was the period when newspapers were produced very largely in Dublin, mostly for local circulation among the English-speaking Protestant upper class. Dr Munter first sets the production of newspapers within the general history of Irish printing and bookselling, and the organisation of the trade. He then examines particular aspects of Irish newspaper history, presenting evidence about the importation of paper and the growth of local manufacture; the development of advertising and its importance as an element in the financial structure of the newspaper; evidence of the profitability of newspapers; circulation figures; the effect of the communications system on the supply and dissemination of news; the status of journalists and the development of the journalistic ethic; and analysis of the contents of the papers.

The State of Freedom
Author: Patrick Joyce
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1107328284
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 391
Book Description
What is the state? The State of Freedom offers an important new take on this classic question by exploring what exactly the state did and how it worked. Patrick Joyce asks us to re-examine the ordinary things of the British state from dusty government files and post offices to well-thumbed primers in ancient Greek and Latin and the classrooms and dormitories of public schools and Oxbridge colleges. This is also a history of the 'who' and the 'where' of the state, of the people who ran the state, the government offices they sat in and the college halls they dined in. Patrick Joyce argues that only by considering these things, people and places can we really understand the nature of the modern state. This is both a pioneering new approach to political history in which social and material factors are centre stage, and a highly original history of modern Britain.

The Hutchinson Illustrated Encyclopedia of British History
Author: Simon Hall
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135934851
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 416
Book Description
The Hutchinson Illustrated Encyclopedia of British History is a comprehensive and authoritative guide to the people, events, and ideas that have shaped Britain from prehistory to the present day. The editors have also sought to convey the truth that history is more than simply a compilation of facts from the past. The editors have included as much factual information as possible in each A-Z entry, and numerous tables and statistics are included, as well as many specially-created maps and plans. The chronological relationships of past events and lives are conveyed through various detailed subject chronologies (attached to the relevant A-Z entries). A large thematic chronology, following the A-Z text, provides a visual reference to the relationship between the events of British/Irish history and events elsewhere in the world. And the cultural context of as many entries as possible has been brought to life via a wide range of illustrations, which provide a wealth of visual detail and, often, a key to past conceptions. Interspersed in the text are 21 specially commissioned, extended feature articles from noted historians that provide the analysis and the sense of the broad sweep of history that would otherwise be impossible to convey in an A-Z reference book.
