Book Description
The development of high critical-temperature thin-film superconductors and coated conducting wires is important for electric power applications. To achieve high transport current density, template films are necessary for the successful deposition of biaxially aligned YBa2Cu3O{sub 7-x} (YBCO) on flexible metal substrates. We grew biaxially aligned magnesium oxide (MgO) template films by ion-beam-assisted deposition with electron-beam evaporation. MgO films of ≈100 Å thickness were deposited on Si3N4-coated Si substrates at a deposition rate of ≈1.5 Å/sec with an ion flux of ≈110 [mu]A/cm2 bombarding the substrate at a 45{sup o} angle. To study crystalline structure by X-ray diffraction, we deposited an additional layer of MgO. Good in- and out-of-plane alignment was observed, with (111) [phi]-scan full-width half-maximum (FWHM) of 6.2{sup o} and (002) [omega]-scan FWHM of 2.2{sup o}.

Book Description
Biaxially textured thin films of magnesium oxide (MgO) were deposited by electron beam evaporation at deposition rates of 0.6[mu]m/min on moving Ni-based alloy tapes as oriented buffer layers for coated conductors. Moving substrates were inclined with respect to the atomic vapor and translated through collimated dual vapor sources. Growth anisotropy in the MgO and self-shadowing effects due to the inclined angle combine to create biaxial texture in the deposited thin films. MgO films grown to a thickness of 2.0[mu]m with this inclined-substrate deposition technique have yielded in-plane textures of 10--12[degree] fill-width half-maximum (FWHM). Results of a parametric study on the in-plane texture in short-length static-mode samples are presented, along with preliminary results of long-length samples deposited under translating conditions.

Book Description
Thin films of YBa[sub 2]Cu[sub 3]O[sub 7-x] (YBCO) were grown on MgO buffered metallic substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The MgO buffer films, which provide the initial biaxial texture, had been grown on polished Hastelloy C276 (HC) tapes using inclined substrate deposition (ISD). The ISD process is promising for the fabrication of coated superconductor wires because it produces biaxially textured template films on nontextured substrate at high deposition rates. Biaxially aligned MgO films were deposited at deposition rates of 20 to 100[angstrom]/sec. The buffer films were deposited on these template films before ablation of the YBCO films by PLD. The microstructure was studied by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. X-ray pole figure analysis and[phi]- and[omega]-scans were used for texture characterization. Good in- and out-of-plane textures were observed on the ISD MgO films ([approx]1.5[micro]m thick). The full width at half maximums were 9.2[sup o] for the MgO (002)[phi]-scan and 5.4[sup o] for the[omega]-scan. Cube-on-cube epitaxial growth of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and ceria (CeO[sub 2]) films on the ISD MgO films was also achieved by PLD. A superconducting critical temperature of 90 K, with a sharp transition, and transport critical current density of>2.5 x 10[sup 5] A/cm[sup 2] were obtained on a 0.5-[micro]m-thick, 0.5-cm-wide, and 1-cm-long YBCO film with MgO buffer layer at 77 K in self-field.

Book Description
YBa2Cu3O27-? (YBCO) coated conductors are promising materials for large-scale superconductivity applications. One version of a YBCO coated conductor is based on ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) of magnesium oxide (MgO) onto polycrystalline metal substrates. SrTiO3 (STO) is often deposited by physical vapor deposition (PVD) methods as a buffer layer between the YBCO and IBAD MgO due to its chemical stability and lattice mismatch of only 1̃.5% with YBCO. In this work, some aspects of the stability of STO with respect to copper (Cu) and chemical solution deposition of STO on IBAD MgO templates were examined. Solubility limits of Cu in STO were established by processing Cu-doped STO powders by conventional bulk preparation techniques. The maximum solubility of Cu in STO was 1̃% as determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Rietveld refinements of x-ray diffraction (XRD) data. XRD analysis, performed in collaboration with NIST, on powder compositions on the STO/SrCuO2 tie line did not identify any ternary phases. SrCu0.10T0.90Oy buffer layers were prepared by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and CSD on IBAD MgO flexible metallic textured tapes. TEM analysis of a 1̃00 nm thick SrCu0.10Ti0.90Oy buffer layer deposited by PLD showed a smooth Cu-doped STO/MgO interface. A 6̃00 nm thick YBCO film, deposited onto the SrCu0.10Ti0.90Oy buffer by PLD, exhibited a Tc of 87 K and critical current density (Jc) of 1̃ MA/cm2. STO and Cu-doped STO thin films by CSD were 3̃0 nm thick. The in plane alignment (FWHM) after deposition of the STO improved by 1̃° while it degraded by 2̃° with the SrCu0.05TiOy buffer. YBCO was deposited by PLD on the STO and SrCu0.05TiOy buffers. The in plane alignment (FWHM) of the YBCO with the STO buffer layer slightly improved while that of the YBCO with the SrCu0.05TiOy buffer layer remained constant. A goal of the CSD approach to fabrication of coated conductors is process simplicity. In this study, single layer textured films were obtained without a nucleating seed layer that has been deemed necessary by several investigators. These results indicate that Cu-doped STO buffer layers deposited by PLD or CSD are compatible with IBAD MgO and YBCO and that CSD is a viable approach to coated conductor fabrication.

This essential reference provides the most comprehensive presentation of state-of-the-art research being conducting worldwide today in this growing field of research and applications. HTS are currently being supported by numerous governmental and industrial initiatives in the USA and Asia and Europe to overcome energy distribution issues and are now being commercialised for power-delivery devices, such as power transmission lines and cables, motors, and generators. Applications in electric utilities include energy-storing devices to help industries avoid dips in electric power, current limiters, and long transmission lines. The technology is particularly thought out for highly-populated and densed areas. Both editors are leading experts in the field from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This book can be used as a companion teaching tool, and also as as a research and professional reference.
