Chapter 1 introduces the concept of religious orientation. In chapter 2, psychological conceptualisations of mental health are discussed. A review of the empirical literature on the relationship between religious orientation and mental health is also included. Chapter 3 consists of a review of the literature on the relationship between religious orientation and authoritarianism. Chapter 4 consists of a review of the literature on the relationship between religious orientation and concepts considered important for mental health by existential psychologists, specifically meaning in life and existential confrontation. In chapter 5 a summary of the main findings, together with some speculative comments on the significance of the new research, is presented. A discussion of some of the limitations of the present work as well as future directions for research in this area which may prove profitable is also included.
