Book Description
Excerpt from The International Protection of Labor Previous to the World War the United States was thought by many to be fully a generation behind Europe with respect to various phases of labor legislation. Certain it is that the United States was among the most backward of great nations in taking part officially in the international regulation of labor conditions. It is the purpose of this book to describe the movement for inter national labor legislation, to present the labor agreements that have resulted therefrom, and to endeavor to Show the legislative developments that may enable the United States to do more than it has heretofore done towards treating labor problems in an international way. Book Description
Excerpt from International Labour Legislation T the close of the International Labour Conference, A at Washington in November, 1919, Mr. H. B. Butler, the secretary-general of the Conference, suggested to me that I might write its history. Since, how ever, an official verbatim record of the proceedings is to be published, it seemed a more profitable expenditure of the time which I could give to this task to attempt not so much a detailed examination of the debates and transactions of the Conference, as a brief exposition of its province, structure, and achievement. I have therefore written this short account of the Inter national Labour Organisation, of which the Conference is the legislative authority, and of its relation to the purpose and fabric of the central instrument of the new international order, the League of Nations. My main desire has been to stimulate interest in these embodiments of the international idea, and to awaken, in what measure I can, public concern for our responsibility towards them. Book Description
Ayusawa, Iwao Frederick. International Labor Legislation. New York: Columbia University Press, 1920. 258 pp. Reprint available February 2005 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. ISBN 1-58477-461-4. Cloth. $80. * A study of the history and progress of international labor agreements, treaties, conventions and congresses that resulted in labor legislation with international applicability or influence on international commercial practices by a Japanese scholar. Ayusawa begins with the origins of international labor legislation in the early nineteenth-century and concludes with an analysis of the 1919 Washington Conference. Important for its historical perspective, this study shows that the central issues of globalization debated today, such as the international community's right to demand changes in local labor practices, are the same ones that affected its first phase during the late-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Originally published as Volume XCI, Number 2 in Columbia's series Studies in History, Economics and Public Law.

Book Description
Excerpt from Principles of Labor Legislation The work is intended to be both critical and constructive critical in that it points out the good and bad features of the statutes, constructive in that it shows how, in the light of experience, the good is being strengthened and the bad remedied. Finally, it is in full recognition that a law is really a law only to the extent to which it is enforced that each chapter emphasizes efficient administration and that the closing chapter is entirely devoted to this complex and all important problem. Book Description
Excerpt from A Selection of Cases and Other Authorities on Labor Law In regard to the cases cited in the footnotes the effort has been made not to give exhaustive collections of decisions, but rather to cite a few leading authorities or suggestive decisions, in the belief that the latter will prove more stimulating and helpful to the student than encyclopaedic collections of cases. An appendix containing figures on minimum budgets for workingmen has been added for the convenience of those who are studying the question of the living wage as worked out in some of the decisions appearing in Chapter XIX by the Australian Court of Conciliation and Arbitration and the Kansas Court of Industrial Relations. It is hoped that this collection of cases may also prove useful as a source book to all those, whether in the ranks of employers or employees, who are interested in studying the development and application of the legal principles underlying the growing mass of decisions which make up the body of labor law.
