Advances in the Development of Integrated Small Ruminant-tree Cropping Systems in South India
Author: C. A. Rajagopala Raja
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 8
Book Description
In developing countries like India, it is the recent trend to develop closely integrated systems of farming, involving crop production, livestock husbandry and aquaculture which are capable of producing extremely high and sustainable yields or energy and protein for human consumption. In integrated systems, agricultural by-products can be passed immediately and directly into livestock and reciprocally animal by=products passed into crop production systems, saving labour and energy and maximising return per unit to land. Very little controlled research work has been reported on integration of small ruminants like goat and sheep with cash crops in India.

Small Ruminant Production Systems in South and Southeast Asia
Author: International Development Research Centre (Canada)
Publisher: IDRC (International Development Research Centre)
ISBN:
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 434
Book Description
Results of a meeting held in Bogor, Indonesia,6-10 October 1986, that focused specifically on the assessment of smallruminant production systems in North and Southeast Asia and considered theprevailing circumstances, the innovations, and the strategies that arepertinent for stimulating increased productivity from goats and sheep. Thepresent patterns of production were examined in detail:characteristics of the small farms, existing management methods, and natureand components of the production systems(extensivesystems, systems combining arable cropping, and systems integrated with treecropping). The discussion of the systems were further highlighted by countrycase studies, issues and policies that considered the available productionresources, especially the genetic and feed resources, constraintsto production, and potential means to achieve desirable improvements. Ansession was devoted to examining research methodology, strategiesfor development appropriate to individual systems, and a conceptual frameworkfor on-farm economic analysis.

Relevance of Integrated Small Ruminant-tree Cropping Systems in the Development of Sustainable Agriculture
Author: C. Devendra
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Land use, Rural
Languages : en
Pages : 11
Book Description
Many benefits of integration are apparent, however, there is a paucity of research results on the effects of crop-animal interactions, quantitative data, and economic analysis. limited evidence does confirm clear advantages of the system. More vigorous research and development efforts are necessary to study the effects of animal integration on the parent crops and effects of primary crop management on small ruminants. Mechanisms for extending the value of integrated systems are essential to enhance the livelihood and food security needs of farmers, growth and conservation goals. [Author's abstract].

Goat Science and Production
Author: Sandra G. Solaiman
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 0813820626
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 444
Book Description
Goat Science and Production is the first text in several decades to present comprehensive, state of the art information on goat science and production practices from an international perspective. Including information on meat, dairy, and fiber goats, chapters are organized logically to facilitate fundamental understanding of goat anatomy and physiology as well as practical production applications. Goat Science and Production begins with an overview of current global production, giving the reader necessary context to enhance subsequent chapters on breed variety, genetics, animal evaluation, and functional anatomy and physiology. Later chapters expand on these concepts highlighting practical application affecting feeding practices, health and disease management, and housing requirements. Information on milk, meat, and fiber production is also addressed, along with a key chapter on formulating a business plan and marketing strategy. The book concludes with a thorough discussion on further needs in research and education providing direction for future progress. Goat Science and Production is globally contributed and provides an essential introduction and reference for students, researchers, outreach personnel, and producers world-wide. Key Features: Provides current information on science and production of meat, dairy, and fiber goats Reviews domestic and international production systems Discusses environmental impacts of goat production Includes coverage of economics and marketing of goat production
