Book Description
Inhaled Particles and Vapors covers the proceedings of an International Symposium by the same title on September 28 – October 1, 1965, organized by the British Occupational Hygiene Society. This book is organized into seven sections encompassing 48 chapters. Section I reviews the anatomy and physiology of human lung. Section II describes the pulmonary response to dust in terms of airway changes and reactions to silica. Sections III and IV deal with lung clearance in animals, the retention, penetration, and elimination of inhaled dusts, and lung deposition and clearance in human. Section V emphasizes the sources of dust inhaled by the human lungs, while Section VI discusses the relationship between pneumonoconiosis and dust exposure. Section VII presents the results of the investigations of dust exposure. This book will prove useful to pulmonologists, toxicologists, and workers in the field of occupational health.

Book Description
The Annals of Occupational Hygiene: Inhaled Particles V emphasizes respired particles, particularly their effects, fate, and entry, by considering quantitative exposure-effect relationships and basic mechanisms. Divided into eight sections, the book presents analysis of the dynamics of particles that enter the mouth or nose, which has been considered relative to hygiene standards grounded on 'total dust'. The concerns include the retention of mineral fibers and asbestos in the lungs. The effects on health of coal dusts and fly ash generally common in the energy industries are considered. The text also presents the tests of the carcinogenicity and pathogenicity of dusts and the toxicity of nitrous oxides. The book then focuses on the response of the airways to aerosols, sulfates, gold mine dusts, and organic dusts. Coal mining and its relationship with the progression of pneumoconiosis are also discussed. The book is a great source of information for those who are doing studies in the field of occupational health, particularly on the effects of dust and other related particles on the health of workers.

Book Description
As part of its continuing program in protecting the health and safety of the nation's coal miners, the Bureau of Mines, Department of the Interior, presented on November 3-4, 1969, a Symposium on Respirable Coal Mine Dust. The Symposium was cosponsored by the American Mining Congress, the National Coal Association, and the National Independent Coal Operator's Association. Within recent years it has become evident that a large number of our coal miners develop a severe occupational respiratory disease commonly referred to as "black lung," but more appropriately designated as "coal worker's pneumoconiosis." Studies in the United States as well as in European countries clearly demonstrate that prevention of the disease is related to the control and suppression of respirable coal mine dust. This Symposium dealt with the various engineering methods of controlling dust in underground coal mines including ventialation, water suppression, machine design, and dust collection; and a discussion of respirators and life support systems. The merits of these various procedures and their potential application to underground coal mining were examined. In every case attempts were made to secure outstanding talent in each of the major areas discussed. The proceedings of the Symposium should constitue a reference on current technology for dust control. The Symposium helped to delineate those areas where additional research is needed and highlighted the necessity for concentrated efforts by both industry and Government for intensive research and investigative programs on engineering procedures to control respirable coal mine dust within prescribed hygienic limits. Hopefully, research will move so rapidly that within a reasonably short time this publication will be out of date in terms of dust control technology

Book Description
Surface Contamination presents the proceedings of first International Symposium on Surface Contamination, held at Gatlinburg, Tennessee in June 1964. The meeting discusses the potential hazards brought about by noxious contaminants on surfaces; the effects of contamination to human health and safety; and the integrity of scientific and technical machinery and products in meeting the exacting requirements. The book contains the work of experts from different technical and administrative disciplines. Areas covered include fundamental research on redispersible and evaporable contamination, including radioactive, biological, chemical, and abrasive contaminants. Administrative and technical problems on radioactive surface contamination control criteria; measurement techniques; environmental control of surface contamination; dissemination of airborne microorganisms; radioactive contamination control applications; biological and chemical surface contamination; insurance and economics; and decontamination are tackled as well. The text will be a good source of information for ecologists, environmentalists, chemists, biologists, students, and policymakers.
