With the help of assistant: I went through the earliest manuscripts preserved in th Board of Revenue, Calcutta, and noted down a list c letters illustrative of the District administratio from 1782 to 1812. The first letters of this lis dealing with the quarter of a century from 1782 to 180: are summarised in the four following volumes. Acknowledge my obligations to successive Lieutenan Governors of Bengal, Sir George Campbell, Sir Richar' Temple, Sir Rivers Thompson, Sir Steuart Bayley, arr especially to Sir Charles Elliot, for aid or encouragemet in the prosecution of the work. But I still more gratd fully record the assistance of my friends, Mr. Charle Dollman, whose promising career was cut short by 3 early death, and Babu Trailokya-nath Muhharji, wh has since won for himself distinction in the service c Government.
