Book Description
With high electron energies a kinematic regime can be reached where it will be possible to separate quasielastic and deep inelastic scattering. We present a short description of these processes which dominate the inclusive spectrum. Using the highest momentum transfer data available to guide our estimates, we give the kinematic requirements and the cross sections expected. These results indicate that inclusive scattering at high q has a yet unfilled potential. 18 refs., 13 figs.

Book Description
Inclusive electron scattering from nuclei at large x and Q^ is the result of a reaction mechanism that includes both quasi-elastic scattering from nucleons and deep inelastic scattering from the quark consitituents of the nucleons. Data in this regime can be used to study a wide variety of topics, including the extraction of nuclear momentum distributions, the influence of final state interactions and the approach to _v-scaling, the strength of nucleon-nucleon correlations, and the approach to x- scaling, to name a few. Selected results from the recent experiment E02-019 at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility will be shown and their relevance discussed.

Book Description
This book provides an up-to-date, self-contained account of deep inelastic scattering in high-energy physics, intended for graduate students and physicists new to the subject. It covers the classic results which led to the quark-parton model of hadrons and the establishment of quantum chromodynamics as the theory of the strong nuclear force, in addition to new vistas in the subject opened up by the electron-proton collider HERA. The extraction of parton momentum distribution functions, a key input for physics at hadron colliders such as the Tevatron at Fermi Lab and the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, is described in detail. The challenges of the HERA data at 'low x' are described and possible explanations in terms of gluon dynamics and other models outlined. Other chapters cover: jet production at large momentum transfer and the determination of the strong coupling constant, electroweak interactions at very high momentum transfers, the extension of deep inelastic techniques to include hadronic probes, a summary of fully polarised inelastic scattering and the spin structure of the nucleon, and finally a brief account of methods in searching for signals 'beyond the standard model'.

Book Description
Inclusive electron scattering measured in the kinematic range of Bjorken x>1 and high momentum transfers can provide important information on reaction mechanisms through the study of scaling violations, and can provide insight on the transition from deep inelastic scattering from quarks to quasielastic scattering from nucleons. Some preliminary results from Jefferson Lab Experiment E89-008 will be presented as well as the increased kinematic range expected for the approved E89-008 Extension with a 6 GeV beam. The increased scope for physics studies with a 12 GeV beam and improved Hall C instrumentation are then discussed.

Book Description
The proceedings of DIS 2001 present the most updated status of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) physics. Topics like structure function measurements and phenomenology, QCD studies in DIS and photoproduction, spin physics and diffractive interactions are reviewed in detail, with emphasis on those studies that push the test of QCD and the Standard Model to the limits of their present range of validity, towards both the very high and the very low four-momentum transfers in the lepton-proton scattering. Moreover, this workshop coincided with the transition between the first period of experimentation at the HERA ep collider at DESY and the start of the updated HERA II operation -- allowing a review of what has been learned up to now and a discussion on the main future directions of research in this field.

Book Description
We will present results from a recently completed experiment (E02-019) at Jefferson Lab in which 6 GeV electrons were scattered from a series of both light and heavy nuclei at high momentum transfers. The scattered electrons were detected in the High Momentum Spectrometer in Hall C at angles between 18 and 50 degrees and with momenta between 2 and 5 GeV. This experiment extends the kinematic coverage of inclusive electron-nucleus scattering at high momentum transfer to large Bjorken x, forbidden for the free nucleon. These new data present the opportunity to the investigate the transition from a regime where the cross sections are dominated by quasielastic scattering and where nucleon degrees of freedom hold sway, to one where the reaction is deep inelastic in nature and described by the more fundamental quarks and gluons. A brief description of the experiment will be followed by a presentation of the preliminary data along with a discussion of the scaling behavior of the data.

Book Description
The emphasis of these expository lectures is on the role of relativistic invariance and the unity of the theory for medium and high energies. Sec. 2 introduces the kinematic notation and provides an elementary derivation of the general cross section. The relevant properties of the Poincare group and the transformation properties of current operators and target states are described in Sec 3. In Sec. 4 representations of target states with kinematic light-front symmetry are briefly discussed. The focus is on two applications. An impulse approximation of inclusive electron nucleus scattering at both medium and high energies. A parton model of the proton applied to deep inelastic scattering of polarized electrons by polarized protons. 19 refs.

Book Description
CEBAF experiment e89-008 measured inclusive electron scattering from nuclei in a Q2 range between 0.8 and 7.3 (GeV/c)2 for x{sub Bjorken} approximately greater than 1. The cross sections for scattering from D C, Fe, and Au were measured. The C, Fe, and Au data have been analyzed in terms of F(y) to examine y-scaling of the quasielastic scattering, and to study the momentum distribution of the nucleons in the nucleus. The data have also been analyzed in terms of the structure function vW2 to examine scaling of the inelastic scattering in x and xi and to study the momentum distribution of the quarks. In the regions where quasielastic scattering dominates the cross section (low Q2 or large negative values of y), the data are shown to exhibit y-scaling. However, the y-scaling breaks down once the inelastic contributions become large. The data do not exhibit x-scaling, except at the lowest values of x, while the structure function does appear to scale in the Nachtmann variable, xi.

Book Description
The authors extend the approach used to treat quasi-elastic inclusive electron-nucleus scattering to the deep inelastic region. They provide a general approach to describe lepton scattering from an off-shell nucleon, and calculate the ratio of inclusive deep inelastic scattering cross sections to the deuteron for nuclear matter and helium (EMC-effect). They find that the consistent inclusion of the binding effects, in particular the ones arising from the short-range nucleon-nucleon interaction, allows to describe the data in the region of x> 0.15 where binding fully accounts for the deviation of the cross section ratios from one.
