Composite interval mapping (CIM) was used to detect QTL for each trait, and the relationships between the QTL detected for the same traits in different generations and among different traits in the same generation were examined. Seven and fourteen QTL for stalk tunneling were observed in the mean environments for the F3 and RI lines of B73 x De811, four and twelve of which, respectively, are linked to QTL for CWCs. The previously reported genetic correlations for ECB stalk tunneling with CWCs in the F3 lines (r[Subscript g] = -0.11 to -0.33) indicate that a genetic association may exist between the two traits. However, the genetic correlations for the RIL were -0.03 to 0.08, raising the possibility that the correlations observed in the F3 lines were either due to environmental factors or the result of linkage disequilibrium. Factors other than concentrations of CWCs appear to be associated with the expression of resistance to stalk tunneling in this population.

This work is a comprehensive collection of articles that cover aspects of cell wall research in the genomic era. Some 2500 genes are involved in some way in wall biogenesis and turnover, from generation of substrates, to polysaccharide and lignin synthesis, assembly, and rearrangement in the wall. Although a great number of genes and gene families remain to be characterized, this issue provides a census of the genes that have been discovered so far. The articles comprising this issue not only illustrate the enormous progress made in identifying the wealth of wall-related genes but they also show the future directions and how far we have to go. The potato is the third most important global food crop in terms of consumption. Being the only vegetatively propagated species among the world’s main five staple crops creates both issues and opportunities for the potato: on the one hand, this constrains the speed of its geographic expansion and its options for international commercialization and distribution when compared with commodity crops such as maize, wheat or rice.
