Book Description
Excerpt from Howard Letters and Memories The following work embodies the history and some of the correspondence of the first thirty-five years of the Howard Association, a Society founded, in 1866, under the patronage of Lord Brougham and others, for the promotion of the best methods of the treatment and prevention of Crime and Pauperism. It also contains some reminiscences of the Colleagues of the writer, as Secretary of the Association, together with notices of conversations and anecdotes relating to other persons in various positions of life. The author's duties brought him into connection with a number of individuals in Europe, America, and the British Colonies, practically conversant with important social questions; and the letters, from many of them, which are contained in this volume, constitute a special feature of it which may interest the reader. They include more than a hundred communications from well-known writers, including Cardinal Manning, John Bright, Lord Derby, Lord Shaftesbury, Lord Selborne, Archbishop Ullathorne, Bishop Westcott, Lord S. G. Osborne, Dr James Martineau, George Miiller, Francis William Newman, Professor Freeman, Professor Max Muller, Matthew Arnold, Barwick Baker, Sir Walter Crofton and others, with some also from American correspondents. These letters and the accompanying chapters relate to a great variety of subjects, such as the help of the Poor and the Unemployed, Vagrancy, Prison Discipline, Urban Overcrowding, the Rural Exodus, Sentences, Capital Punishment, Temperance, International Arbitration and Peace, the Press, the Churches and Theology, the Colonies, the United States and the European Continent. Book Description
Excerpt from Memoirs of Howard: Compiled From His Diary, His Confidential Letters, and Other Authentic Documents Aikin's Life of Howard is scarcely to be found, and is so defective, that it ought not to be te printed. Ir has been our object to furnish these memoirs in a cheap and convenient form for Sabbath Schools, and family libraries; and we knew of no way, in which this could so well be done, as by an abridgment of Brown's Life. Book Description
Excerpt from Life and Letters of John Howard Raymond It seems almost a violation of my father's nature, which was most unassuming, to offer the public the record of the life on which he himself see so modest an estimate; and I may, perhaps, confess to those who read this volume with what hesitation it is published. It has grown from a mere compilation of his private letters, intended for the eyes of family friends, into an extended memoir, as the circle of those manifestly interested in its progress has gradually widened. It was a natural and sacred impulse to gather together for preservation the letters which held so much of himself, that a treasure in which we had delighted might not be lost to our children. But it was only when persuaded that the number of those waiting to welcome it was large, among his former pupils, associates, and personal friends, that I consented to undertake a work in which I was totally inexperienced - the selection from a mass of correspondence and other material such portions as might most characteristically show his life and influence. The first decisive impulse which I received was from the words of one who had been in special sympathy with the plan, and who wrote, "I did revere and love and enjoy the man, and I think that some of the rich overflow of his life ought to be gathered up, as the moisture is drawn into the clouds, and sent forth to refresh the thirsty earth once more." It was an inspiring thought that the story of his life might still hold a blessing for those whom the life itself had blessed; or even more, that others, to whom it had been unknown, might glean from it some word of comfort or instruction. It is only with this hope that I send it from my hand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Letters of Horace Howard Furness, Vol. 1 Again, in the Introduction to Records of a Lifelong Friendship he said: Lack of punctu ation or of question marks, abbreviations or even mis-spellings, it is, I think, no part of an editor to correct. They are evidences of haste or of char acter, or of familiarity, and, as such, should be pre served. This Opinion has been followed as closely as possible in these volumes. Book Description
Excerpt from Letters, Journals and Memories of E. Huntington Blatchford, 1920 Frances May Blatchford began this life eleven years earlier than the brother of whom she writes, and ended it thirteen years later. His living presence had been her most vivid and pervasive joy; his memory through those last years was the background of her daily living; the inspiration of her purposes, the refuge from her disappointments. Her love for him developed fast from the elder sister's fondness for the baby of the family into a totally different sentiment. He soon grew old enough to touch her imagination, to awaken her confidence, to rouse her admiration. While still a boy in years he became her practical adviser and her knight of romance. If he had lived to marry, one wonders what woman could have satisfied her requirements as a fit mate for her Galahad, but probably the fact that she was his choice would have covered her with a glamor through which no faults could have emerged save faults of omission or commission toward him. There is no doubt that while gifted with a keen power of character analysis, it was a gift rather than an acquirement; always instinctive, rather than logical, always influenced, sometimes clouded by feeling.
