Landscape in Sight
Author: John Brinckerhoff Jackson
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 9780300080742
Category : Gardening
Languages : en
Pages : 446
Book Description
During a long and distinguished career, John Brinckerhoff Jackson (1909-1996) brought about a new understanding and appreciation of the American landscape. Hailed in 1995 by New York Times architectural critic Herbert Muschamp as 'America’s greatest living writer on the forces that have shaped the land this nation occupies,' Jackson founded Landscape Magazine in 1951, taught at Harvard University and the University of California at Berkeley, and wrote nearly 200 essays and reviews. This appealing anthology of his most important writings on the American landscape, illustrated with his own sketches and photographs, brings together Jackson’s most famous essays, significant but less well known writings, and articles that were originally published unsigned or under various pseudonyms. Jackson also completed a new essay for this volume, 'Places for Fun and Games,' a few months before his death. Focusing not on nature but on landscape - land shaped by human presence - Jackson insists in his writings that the workaday world gives form to the essential American landscape. In the everyday places of the countryside and city, he discerns texts capable of revealing important truths about society and culture, present and past. For this collection Helen Lefkowitz Horowitz provides an introduction that discusses the larger body of Jackson’s writing and locates each of the selected essays within his oeuvre. She also includes a complete bibliography of Jackson’s writings.

Shoulda Turned Left at Albu-Quirky
Author: Debora L. Carr
Publisher: Dog Ear Publishing
ISBN: 160844869X
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 126
Book Description
Ever wonder why Bugs Bunny kept getting lost... and why it was always due to that missed left turn at Albuquerque? Well in this book you just might discover that perhaps ol' Bugs didn't have such a poor memory or bad sense of direction after all. Perhaps he knew something the rest of us didn't. Come along for yet another marvelous, meandering road trip, courtesy of author Debora L. Carr as she continues to explore the mind-boggling sights in the vast and varied state of New Mexico. There are more natural wonders, strange towns and wild artwork to goggle at as well as unexplained mysteries, bizarre news items and unusual characters that will keep you scratching your head in amazement. You never know what you'll discover around the next bend in the rutted, winding road or what you'll miss out on if you don't miss that left turn. So keep your eyes peeled for those hidden gems of weird wonders that lurk at the side of the road and watch out for those spandex-clad two-wheeled kamakazis. Just turn off the GPS and follow that "wascally wabbit" as the adventure continues in the Wild, Wacky Land of Enchantment Debora Carr was born and raised in the central New Jersey area, graduating from Rutgers University with a BA in Art Education in 1980 and became a successful professional graphic artist and packaging designer. She chose to accompany her parents when they decided to relocate to and retire in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2003, where she continued her chosen profession of graphic artist, working as a one-person art department for a small print shop. She continued to keep in touch with friends and family members 'back east' by means of periodic humorous newsletters which she called her 'Albu-Quirky Journals' in which she detailed her perspective on life in New Mexico. She later collected some of these reports and rewrote them in a tongue-in-cheek essay form, emulating the short stories written by two of her favorite authors, James Thurber and Mark Twain. Her collections of these amusing vignettes include her first two books, "You Don't Need a Passport to Move to New Mexico" and "Home on the Strange." Debora still revels in collecting stories and photos of all things weird, odd and unusual and is delighted to find that her new home state of New Mexico is overflowing with them. With any luck, it will continue to provide fodder for more entries into her "Albu-Quirky Journals" for many years to come. The WPA Guide to New Mexico
Author: Federal Writers' Project
Publisher: Trinity University Press
ISBN: 159534229X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 577
Book Description
During the 1930s in the United States, the Works Progress Administration developed the Federal Writers’ Project to support writers and artists while making a national effort to document the country’s shared history and culture. The American Guide series consists of individual guides to each of the states. Little-known authors—many of whom would later become celebrated literary figures—were commissioned to write these important books. John Steinbeck, Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, and Ralph Ellison are among the more than 6,000 writers, editors, historians, and researchers who documented this celebration of local histories. Photographs, drawings, driving tours, detailed descriptions of towns, and rich cultural details exhibit each state’s unique flavor. The WPA Guide to New Mexico certainly shows how this Southwest state earned its nickname the “Colorful State.” The blended influence of Native American, Spanish, and Anglo-American cultures account for the Land of Enchantment’s distinct flavor, thoroughly captured in the guide’s stunning photography as well as in its many essays on art, folklore, and language.
