Book Description
Excerpt from How to Advertise Printing The most interesting preface of a book that I ever read is that in the front of "Eccentricities of Genius," written by my friend, the late Major J. B. Pond, of New York. After stating that he had three thousand volumes in his library, but that none of the prefaces suited him, he proceeded to take extracts from a half-dozen or more of these books, using those paragraphs, all more or less suitable, as the preface of his own book, telling of his association with great men and women. I could hardly follow such a course in the preface of this volume, however, because it is, in a sense, a pioneer in the field of books. Nothing like it has ever been written, to my knowledge. There are books devoted to the advertising of some other lines of trade, but none dealing particularly with the advertising of the printer. For that reason I can hardly claim that my work "fills a long-felt want," and we do not have many long-felt wants of any kind in this progressive age. Wants are not felt very long before they are filled, and many needs are even anticipated before the public really knows that it has them. Book Description
Excerpt from About Advertising and Printing: A Concise, Practical, and Original Manual on the Art of Local Advertising Any one can write an advertisement, and almost any one can write it to please the advertiser; but often the advertisement which is so gratifying to the writer will hardly attract a passing notice from the possible customer. Whether or not the advertisement be pleasing to the pride of the writer or advertiser is a question of small consideration, but vital importance hinges upon the capacity of the advertisement to attract the people, and, by attracting them, gain their intelligent attention, which, once obtained, must force the gist of the advertisement into their minds, and, if they be available customers to the line advertised, impress upon them the wisdom of an inspection of the goods advertised. Book Description
Excerpt from How to Find Costs in Printing Ours is one of the greatest industries from any view point. Measured by its power to promote the happiness and welfare of the human race, it is the greatest industry of them all. It is mortifying to be compelled to compare the business of even its smallest unit to that of the cob bler. But facts, stubborn things that they are, must be faced as we find them. Excerpt from The Faith of a Quaker There arise also the insistent questions which beset all mystics, and which in Quakerism demanded a corporate, instead of an individual, answer.
