And as this author gives the most ancient seeamt of the Islands of Orkney and Zetland, of the Western Isles, of Caithness, Sutherland, and counties round the Murray Frith, and mentions many things that may ii lustrate the history of Scotland, I thought proper to trans late it, as it may engage others that are more capable. And have access to libraries, to put these hints in a better dress, and add to the work what is wanting to illustrate the his tory of the times. I have omitted many passages contained in this author, but these were either genealogies of Norwegian families, or long chronological disputes, or else tedious paragraphs from the history of other nations, which had little or no connection with the history of these counties I have men tioned. As to what concerns any part of Scotland I have not omitted the least hint, so that a connection is more visible in the whole by omitting these things. Excerpt from Notes on Orkney and Zetland, Vol. 1: Illustrative of the History, Antiquities, Scenery, and Customs of Those Islands It may be proper to state, that the writer of these Notes has been res1dent in Orkney for a period of above seven years, and that, during the greater part of that time, he has devoted a considerable portion of his leisure to the investigation of every thing in that district by which its past or present condition are characterised. This has been done partly for his own gratification, and partly in the discharge of public duties. In those inquiries, he found Wallace' s and Barry's Accounts of Orkney (both of these being also now scarce) unsatisfactory in many important particulars, especially with rc ference to the period that the islands have been ah nexed to Scotland. And he has attempted to supply various defects, as well as to correct imper feet views, by having recourse to original records and papers, which were either inaccessible to those writers, or were passed over by them without due attention being bestowed upon the tenor of the original documents.
