El último cuarto del siglo XX fue el escenario de una "gran vuelta hacia el pasado". La temporalidad, la historia y la memoria, fueron ejes de debates académicos importantes en el seno de la historia y de la filosofía. Pero también fueron indicadores de un cierto malestar cultural con el presente, que obligaba a abordar de manera reflexiva aquello que entraba en juego en ese giro hacia el pasado. Si la primera alarma sonó en las tiendas de los filósofos de la historia y de los historiadores, pronto se vio que las otras formas de traer el pasado al presente (la conmemoración, la evocación legitimadora, la intervención de los historiadores como publicistas y la omnipresente apelación a la memoria) obligaban a interrogar a fondo nuestro presente y, para quien se atreviera, a repensar nuestro horizonte de futuro. Para no pocos intérpretes, el gran giro hacia el pasado fue la respuesta paradójica a la acusación de amnesia estructural, que tantas veces se esgrimiera contra la cultura moderna. También se interpretó como la contracara de la "difuminación" del futuro, resultado de la crítica a la utopía, de la reacción frente al futurismo de los revolucionarios o reformistas, o del descubrimiento de la contingencia y el riesgo. Tratar de comprender esa "crisis del tiempo" es el objetivo de estas páginas.

In this work, I explore four meanings of 'contemporary,' emphasizing its designation as a historical field. I argue that disagreements about when the presento or the contemporary era begins stem from historians assuming a linear, chronological, and absolute conception of time. Following scholars like L. Descombes, L. Hölscher, B. Latour, D. J. Wilcox and S. Tanaka, I propose conceiving relational historical time without chronology, emphasizing the original sense of “sharing the same time” that 'contemporary' acquired for the first time. This perspective mitigates issues concerning the 'beginnings' or 'meaning' of the present. Emphasizing relationships within a relational time framework aids in overcoming ontological challenges like 'so many presents' or 'distance in time,' along with the corresponding epistemological issue of 'objectivity.' This exploration aims to reevaluate and enrich our understanding of the multifaceted concept of the 'present' in the context of history.
