Book Description
A compact, low cost pulse unit for driving x-ray tube control grids has been developed. The pulse unit uses a pair of high voltage, metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs) operating as high-side and low-side drivers for a 50 Ω impedance matched system. The performance of the pulse unit was measured using a basic load condition as required for super high voltage (SHV) cable connections to an experimental vacuum chamber containing an electron gun with a micro focus beam. The utility of high voltage pulses in the implementation of an electron gun for x-ray phase contrast imaging (XRPCI) permit an anode comprised of a thin molybdenum film while preserving a high beam power density. The test data shows the ability to deliver voltage pulses of up to 1.7 kV peak and widths of 10 ns. Design of auxiliary power supply units and pulse input circuitry demonstrates the ability to drive MOSFET gates with source references floated at high voltage supply levels using readily available low voltage pulse units, micro-controllers or one shot circuits. Careful supply and trigger isolation allow the re-referencing of the load and its SHV coaxial drive cable to a safe ground potential. The concept of drive isolation provides a means to connect pulse signals to earth grounded vacuum chambers utilizing high voltage anode electron guns and x-ray generation.

Book Description
Examines the foundation of pulse power technology in detail to optimize the technology in modern engineering settings Pulsed power technologies could be an answer to many cutting-edge applications. The challenge is in how to develop this high-power/high-energy technology to fit current market demands of low-energy consuming applications. This book provides a comprehensive look at pulsed power technology and shows how it can be improved upon for the world of today and tomorrow. Foundations of Pulsed Power Technology focuses on the design and construction of the building blocks as well as their optimum assembly for synergetic high performance of the overall pulsed power system. Filled with numerous design examples throughout, the book offers chapter coverage on various subjects such as: Marx generators and Marx-like circuits; pulse transformers; pulse-forming lines; closing switches; opening switches; multi-gigawatt to multi-terawatt systems; energy storage in capacitor banks; electrical breakdown in gases; electrical breakdown in solids, liquids and vacuum; pulsed voltage and current measurements; electromagnetic interference and noise suppression; and EM topology for interference control. In addition, the book: Acts as a reference for practicing engineers as well as a teaching text Features relevant design equations derived from the fundamental concepts in a single reference Contains lucid presentations of the mechanisms of electrical breakdown in gaseous, liquid, solid and vacuum dielectrics Provides extensive illustrations and references Foundations of Pulsed Power Technology will be an invaluable companion for professionals working in the fields of relativistic electron beams, intense bursts of light and heavy ions, flash X-ray systems, pulsed high magnetic fields, ultra-wide band electromagnetics, nuclear electromagnetic pulse simulation, high density fusion plasma, and high energy- rate metal forming techniques.

Book Description
Our ability to manipulate short wavelength radiation (0.01-100nm, equivalent to 120keV-12eV) has increased significantly over the last three decades. This has lead to major advances in applications in a wide range of disciplines such as: the life and medical sciences, including cancer-related studies; environmental science, including studies of pollution and its effects; archaeology and other cultural heritage disciplines; and materials science. Although expansion in application areas is due largely to modern synchrotron sources, many applications will not become widespread, and therefore routinely available as analytical tools, if they are confined to synchrotrons. This is because synchrotrons require enormous capital and infrastructure costs and are often, of necessity, national or international facilities. This seriously limits their scope for applications in research and analysis, in both academia and industry. How many universities, research institutes or even industrial laboratories would have electron microscopes if electron sources cost ú100M or more Hence the need to develop bright but small and (relatively) cheap x-ray sources, not to replace synchrotrons but to complement them. Written by a distinguished team of international authors this exemplary new handbook is based on the COST Action MP0601: Short Wavelength Laboratory Sources. The contents are divided into five main sections. The introductory section provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of radiation, generation mechanisms and short wavelength laboratory sources. The middle sections focus on modelling and simulation, source development: improvement and characterisation and integrated systems: sources, optics and detectors. The final section looks at recent applications.

Book Description
Extreme ultraviolet radiation, also referred to as soft X-rays or XUV, offers very special optical properties. The X-UV refractive index of matter is such that normal reflection cannot take place on polished surfaces whereas beam transmission through one micrometer of almost all materials reduces to zero. Therefore, it has long been a difficult task to imagine and to implement devices designed for complex optics experiments in this wavelength range. Thanks to new sources of coherent radiation - XUV-lasers and High Order Harmonics - the use of XUV radiation, for interferometry, holography, diffractive optics, non-linear radiation-matter interaction, time-resolved study of fast and ultrafast phenomena and many other applications, including medical sciences, is ubiquitous.
