Low-Temperature X-Ray Diffraction
Author: Reuben Rudman
Publisher: Springer
ISBN:
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 370
Book Description
Low-temperature X-ray diffraction (LTXRD) investigations offer many challenges to the diffractionist, not all of which are technical or scientific in nature. LTXRD studies can be frustrating: There are at least two reports of investigations ruined by the loss of crystals (grown with extreme difficulty) because of the widespread power failure and blackout in the northeastern United States in late 1965. LTXRD studies can cause discomfort: In several instances, "low temperatures" have been attained by opening all the windows in the X-ray laboratory. LTXRD studies can be dangerous: It was once reported that a crys tal was lost because a laboratory assistant fell down a flight of stairs and lay unconscious for about an hour on his way to refilling a liquid-nitrogen (LN2 ) dewar. This last report indicated the disposition of the crystal but not that of the laboratory assistant. However, in general, the results of low-temperature X-ray diffraction investigations cannot be obtained in any other manner, and one is well compensated for the effort expended in constructing and maintaining a low-temperature system. Crystal-structure analyses of solidified liquids and gases, phase transformation investigations, accurate crystal-structure analy ses and electron-density maps, thermal expansion measurements, and defect structure studies are a few of the many important applications of LTXRD.

Elements of Modern X-ray Physics
Author: Jens Als-Nielsen
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 0470973943
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 440
Book Description
Eagerly awaited, this second edition of a best-selling text comprehensively describes from a modern perspective the basics of x-ray physics as well as the completely new opportunities offered by synchrotron radiation. Written by internationally acclaimed authors, the style of the book is to develop the basic physical principles without obscuring them with excessive mathematics. The second edition differs substantially from the first edition, with over 30% new material, including: A new chapter on non-crystalline diffraction - designed to appeal to the large community who study the structure of liquids, glasses, and most importantly polymers and bio-molecules A new chapter on x-ray imaging - developed in close cooperation with many of the leading experts in the field Two new chapters covering non-crystalline diffraction and imaging Many important changes to various sections in the book have been made with a view to improving the exposition Four-colour representation throughout the text to clarify key concepts Extensive problems after each chapter There is also supplementary book material for this title available online (http://booksupport.wiley.com). Praise for the previous edition: "The publication of Jens Als-Nielsen and Des McMorrow's Elements of Modern X-ray Physics is a defining moment in the field of synchrotron radiation... a welcome addition to the bookshelves of synchrotron–radiation professionals and students alike.... The text is now my personal choice for teaching x-ray physics...." —Physics Today, 2002

Advanced Biomaterials--characterization, Tissue Engineering, and Complexity
Author: Steven C. Moss
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 392
Book Description
This proceedings volume is a compilation of papers from three symposia held at the 2001 MRS Fall Meeting in Boston. Historically, some of the most outstanding breakthroughs in the biological sciences have stemmed from the application of physical characterization techniques to the examination of biological materials and systems. Excellent examples include the application of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to the examination of human tissues and the use of X-ray diffraction to determine the structure of DNA. Symposium FF, Physical Characterization of Biological Materials and Systems, draws together researchers from a diverse range of disciplines that are applying physical characterization techniques to the study of biological materials and systems. The past decade has also seen an explosion in novel polymer synthetic and processing routes that allow control of tissue engineering scaffolds at the micro-, nano-, and even molecular levels. These advanced techniques are enabling tissue engineers to synthesize scaffolds and templates that intimately regulate cell behavior. Researchers from Symposium GG, Polymeric Biomaterials for Tissue Engineering, come together here to identify and elaborate upon the unifying themes in polymeric synthesis, processing and characterization as specifically applied to tissue engineering research. In Symposium HH, Bioinspired Materials--Moving Towards Complexity, chemists, physicists, biologists and engineers join together to discuss the interdisciplinary development of synthetic materials based on concepts for materials design found in nature. Their potential for biomedical applications, electronics, catalysis, separation technology and adhesion areaddressed.
