Book Description
The acclaimed bestseller -- a selection of Oprah's Book Club -- that brings vividly to life the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC, circa 1925, and a community reeling from a young girl's tragic death. When five-year-old Clara Bynum drowns in the Potomac River under a seemingly haunted rock outcropping known locally as the Three Sisters, the community must reconcile themselves to the bitter tragedy. Clarke powerful charts the fallout from Clara's death on the people she has left behind: her parents, Alice and Willie Bynum, torn between the old world of their rural North Carolina home and the new world of the city; the friends and relatives of the Bynum family in the Georgetown neighborhood they now call home; and, most especially, Clara's sister, ten-year-old Johnnie Mae, who is thrust into adolescence and must come to terms with the terrible and confused emotions stirred by her sister's death. This highly accomplished debut novel reverberates with ideas, impassioned lyricism, and poignant historical detail as it captures an essential and moving portrait of the Washington, DC community.

Now a Netflix Original Series. Forbidden Falls Reverend Noah Kincaid moved to town to reopen an abandoned church, and the young widower finds an unusual assistant in brash and beautiful Alicia Baldwin. Noah and Alicia are an unlikely team to revitalize a church, much less build a future. The couple has so many differences, but in Virgin River anything is possible, and happiness is never out of the question. Angel’s Peak Sean Riordan has settled down in spite of himself—he’s not the cocky young fighter pilot he was when Franci Duncan left him four years ago, and he wants them to try again. After all, they have a history. But that’s not all they share… Franci’s secret reason for walking away when Sean refused to commit is now a toddler. News travels fast, and soon the whole town is taking sides. Rebuilding their trust could take a small miracle—and the kind of love that can move mountains. Moonlight Road Erin Foley is hitting the pause button on her rat-race life and holing up in a secluded cabin. Her plan is to get to know herself…not the shaggy-haired mountain man she meets. Beneath his faded fatigues and bushy beard, Aiden Riordan is a doctor, recharging for a summer after leaving the navy. Erin seems determined to keep him at arm’s length, but he’d love to get closer—if his scruffy exterior and crazy ex-wife don’t hold him back. But there’s something in the water in Virgin River, and unlikely romances tend to take root… Midnight Confessions Drew Foley and Sunny Archer are each visiting Virgin River for the holidays. Sunny was dumped at the altar the previous New Year’s Eve and is in no mood to celebrate. But she’s dragged along to the party at Jack’s Bar. Drew, getting over his own heartbreak, sees Sunny across the crowded room and he’s instantly smitten. As the townspeople gather, two lonely revelers decide the best balm for their broken hearts might just be ringing in the new year with a special midnight kiss. Book Description
Welcome and Thank you: Gloucester's Inaugural Festival of the Arts is excited to bring you the first catalogue of The Heart of the River Collection. This group of over 100 paintings by 21 comtemporary plein air artists, captures the beauty of our life along the rivers, fields and communities in Virginia. Plein air painting gained favor with the French Impressionists. They took their canvases out of the studio to paint outside (en plein air) in order to capture the effects of transient light. They sought to create an art of movement, candid poses and composition, emphasizing the natural light and the viewer's quick study. Not fussy or belabored, plein air painting is increasingly appreciated by today collectors and painters, with the number of plein air festivals increasing across the United States. Featuring the landscapes of Gloucester County, this collection was painted in a little under a week in May 2017. All the artists invited to participate in this inaugural festival had the honor of being included in Gary Pendleton's book 100 Plein Air Painters of the Mid-Atlantic. We are very pleased to bring you the fruits of their amazing work in the following pages. Awestruck was the word foremost in my mind when I first walked into its Arts on Main Gallery to see the collection hung together. What talent! What wonderful paintings! What a phenomenal body of work enhanced by being displayed together, the white brick walls providinga perfect backdrop to the splendidly colorful and fresh works. Each painting capturing the magic of our envisions in a unique way, personal to the artist, yet with an appeal to the viewing audience that was both individual and universal. These artists have conjured up the mystic enchantment of nature and transferred to canvas where we can eternally savor the delicate morning light or myterious dusk looking at the boats on the river, horses in the field, red star chickens, or the serenity of the saltmarsh. Place we all inherently recognize and with which we feel a connection, vistas that revive our senses, both grounding and uplifting us, making our hearts soar with the joy of seeing what we love, and we breathe in deeply. The artists' fresh eye gently and unpretentiously reminds us to look up from our technological devices and take nourishment from the beautiful world in which we are so fortunate to live. We hope you will enjoy this catalogue which is the result of many people combined hard work, the artists, the committee members, our hosts and volunteers, that made this event a reality. My thanks to all and to you, honored viewer of this inaugural collection. Adrianne Ryder-Cook Joseph, President Cook Foundation.
