Book Description
Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are valuable institutions that provide intellectual domains for racial uplift, racial refuge, and cultural empowerment within a continually polarized nation. Today’s current racial climate reminds us of the historical context that gave birth to HBCUs and segregated athletic experiences. While the sporting life at HBCUs is an integral part of these institutions’ mission, there is a dearth of research about HBCU athletics. In The Athletic Experience at Historically Black Colleges and Universities: Past, Present, and Persistence, leading scholars from across the nation present a holistic examination of the integral role sports have played at HBCUs. Chapters in this volume cover a range of topics, from HBCU Football Classics to economics. It begins with a historical overview of HBCUs and the early sporting life before delving into the experiences of today’s male and female student-athletes—including the unique perspectives of athletes who transferred from historically White colleges and universities to HBCUs. Other chapters examine economic issues at HBCUs, such as the financial viability of their athletic departments in the context of the larger NCAA economic framework, and recommendations for the future of HBCU athletics to restore both academic and athletic excellence at these institutions. An important addition to the existing literature on race in contemporary society, this volume provides a narrative of the Black experience from the historical origins of educating Blacks, their early athletic experiences, and the current state of athletics at HBCUs. The Athletic Experience at Historically Black Colleges and Universities is a significant contribution to the debate on college athletics and higher education, in general, and athletics at HBCUs, specifically. It is a must-read for sport studies scholars and students, sport management practitioners, and sport enthusiasts of the inter-workings of athletics and the HBCU experience.

Book Description
The treasure of the Black experience at a Historically Black College/University (HBCU) is that it offers a personal and intimate experience rooted in Black heritage that cannot be found at other institutions. On campus, face-to-face instruction and activities focused on addressing issues that plague the Black community are paramount. This provides students with small classroom environments and the personal support from administrators, faculty, and staff. In March 2020, the Black experience was interrupted when a global pandemic forced governors to declare states of emergencies and mandate stay-at-home orders. The stay-at-home orders forced universities to transition into fully remote environments. Doing so heightened an array of emotions compounded by the reality of previously recognized disparities in resources and funding amongst higher education institutions. As a result of this abrupt transformation, the HBCU experience was impacted by positive and negative implications for Black people at the campus, local, state, and national levels. The Black Experience and Navigating Higher Education Through a Virtual World explores the reality of the Black experience from various perspectives involving higher education institutions with a focus on HBCUs. The book provides an overview and analysis of a virtual experience that goes beyond the day-to-day technological implications and exposes innovative ideas and ways of navigating students and faculty through a remote world. It focuses on heightening the awareness of disparities through the Black experience in a virtual environment, provides guidance on transitioning to fully remote environments, examines leadership dynamics in virtual environments, analyzes mental health balance, and examines implications on the digital divide. Covering topics such as online course delivery, self-health, and social justice, this book is essential for graduate students, academicians, diversity officers in the academy, professors, and researchers.

Book Description
Co-edited by Historically Black College and University (HBCU) alumni Dr. Tia Tyree and Christopher D. Cathcart, HBCU Experience The Book celebrates the rich legacy and experiences of those who attended HBCUs. This groundbreaking anthology chronicles undergraduate realities, such as dating and relationships, dorm living, road trips, pledging fraternities and sororities, student activism and leadership; athletics and more. Further, with the debate still raging over the relevance and need for HBCUs in the new millennium, this collection of essays helps showcase the unique experiences of HBCU graduates, highlights the important need for these institutions and accentuates the overall benefits of having an HBCU education. "I love the HBCU Experience; there's nothing like it. Most of the people I hired as staff or interns through the years came from an HBCU, and the most prominent icons of the Civil Rights Movement came out of the HBCU Experience; which included stellar leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Congressman John Lewis, Ambassador Andrew Young, Stokely Carmichael, NAACP Leader Medgar Evers and Actor/Activist Ossie Davis." -Jeff Burns, Jr., Author, "The Brotherhood of Drew Hall" HBCU Experience - The Book is a fulfilling memoir. The book is a legacy to be treasured, with first-person accounts that offer readers an authentic reality as they learn or reminisce. -Jannette L. Dates, Ph.D., Dean Emerita of the Howard University School of Communications; co-editor/primary author of Split Image: African Americans in the Mass Media and co-author of The Obamas and Mass Media: Race, Gender, Religion, and Politics The HBCU culture and history is so rich that it deserves to have its stories told. As a custodian of the HBCU flame, I am thankful we have Tia and Chris to be our lions and this wonderful book to tell our tales." -Michael J. Sorrell, Esq,. President of Paul Quinn College "Capturing the true essence of the HBCU experience is nearly impossible for people who are not HBCU alumni until now. This book is a must-read for alums who want to reflect on the good old days and for high school students considering their college options." - Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., President & CEO of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund
