Book Description
This handbook incisively explores challenges and opportunities that exist in efforts aimed at addressing inequities in mental health provision across the globe. Drawing on various disciplines across the humanities, psychology, and social sciences it charts the emergence of Global Mental Health as a field of study. It critically reflects on efforts and interventions being made to globalize mental health policies, and discusses key themes relevant for understanding and supporting the mental health needs of people living in diverse socio-economical and cultural environments. Over three rich sections, the handbook critically engages with Global Mental Health discourses. To help guide future efforts to support mental health and wellbeing in different parts of the world, the third section of the handbook consists of case studies of innovative mental health policy and practice, which are presented from a variety of different perspectives. This seminal handbook will appeal to a transnational community of post-graduate students, academics and practitioners, from global health to transcultural psychiatry and medical anthropology. It will be also of interest to researchers and clinical practitioners, policy makers and non-governmental organisations involved in cross-cultural mental health work.

Book Description
In 2015, building on the advances of the Millennium Development Goals, the United Nations adopted Sustainable Development Goals that include an explicit commitment to achieve universal health coverage by 2030. However, enormous gaps remain between what is achievable in human health and where global health stands today, and progress has been both incomplete and unevenly distributed. In order to meet this goal, a deliberate and comprehensive effort is needed to improve the quality of health care services globally. Crossing the Global Quality Chasm: Improving Health Care Worldwide focuses on one particular shortfall in health care affecting global populations: defects in the quality of care. This study reviews the available evidence on the quality of care worldwide and makes recommendations to improve health care quality globally while expanding access to preventive and therapeutic services, with a focus in low-resource areas. Crossing the Global Quality Chasm emphasizes the organization and delivery of safe and effective care at the patient/provider interface. This study explores issues of access to services and commodities, effectiveness, safety, efficiency, and equity. Focusing on front line service delivery that can directly impact health outcomes for individuals and populations, this book will be an essential guide for key stakeholders, governments, donors, health systems, and others involved in health care.

Book Description
A wide-ranging analysis of community involvement in health development (CIH) as a concept, a strategy, and an ongoing experiment in the search for ways to improve health care for the majority of the world's population. Noting that discussions of health-sector reform have given CIH greater prominence, the book aims to provide a resource of ideas and practical methods for all health professionals interested in applying a participatory approach to development work. The book has seven chapters. The first traces the historical evolution of the concept of CIH and discusses its place within the broader areas of development theory and practice. The next three chapters provide detailed case studies of recent experiences with CIH in Bolivia, Nepal, and Senegal. Chapter five, on health development structures, draws on data from nine countries included in a study, which explored the potential of civil society organizations to promote and facilitate CIH. Results of the study confirm the considerable potential of health development structures to bring together both different sectors and different levels of government. Chapter six discusses the need to develop an appropriate methodology of participatory development. Lessons from the case studies are used to identify a set of operational principles for community action for health. The final chapter draws a number of important conclusions concerning ways in which the concept of CIH can move closer to practical reality. Many past failures are attributed to the unrealistic expectation that participatory efforts would make it possible to achieve more with less money.

Book Description
A step-by-step guide to the correct management of respiratory infections in infants and young children. Addressed to staff in first-level health facilities, the book explains how to assess a child, recognize symptoms, classify the illness, and provide appropriate treatment, whether involving immediate referral to hospital, treatment with antibiotics at home, or simple home care. Throughout, a special effort is made to help staff distinguish the few, very sick children from the many others whose infections can be safely treated at home. The manual also aims to help prevent deaths from pneumonia and other severe illnesses by offering abundant advice on the recognition and urgent management of danger signs. The manual has two parts, each based on the use of a quick-reference case management chart, reproduced in a foldout version. Part one covers the management of pneumonia, wheezing, coughs and colds. Advice on how to collect essential information about the signs of respiratory problems is followed by a description of the steps involved in classifying the illness, determining the degree of severity, and identifying the appropriate treatment. Part one concludes with detailed treatment instructions, including how to give an antibiotic and treat fever and wheezing. Part two explains how to assess, classify, and treat the child with an ear problem or sore throat. Treatment instructions include advice on how to dry the ear by wicking, give an antibiotic, and manage streptococcal sore throat. Further practical information is provided in a series of annexes, which explain how to refer a child to hospital, what to do when referral is not feasible, how to use a rapid-acting bronchodilator, and how to determine whether complaints and symptoms are due to measles, pertussis, or diphtheria.
