Book Description
Almost a hundred years passed from the time of the first description of an intracranial aneurysm by Morgagni in 1761 to the year 1859, when Sir William Withey Gull arrived at the conclusion that haemorrhage in the subarachnoid space is caused by ruptured aneurysms. The introduction of lumbar puncture by Quincke 1891 and cerebral angiography by Moniz 1927 made it possible to establish the diagnosis of haemorrhage and its source. In recent decades the problems of treatment have come into prominence, first of all because of the inadequacy of conservative methods of treatment in most of the cases, and from surgical experience and its limitations which became apparent before very long. Because of the erratic development of neurosurgery and vascular surgery, above all, since the technique of microsurgery has been used, the entire removal of the source of haemorrhage has become a possibility, even though there were still quite different views taken regarding the most convenient time for surgical intervention, apart from the prevailing local conditions 134, 143, 144,261. In an up-to-date plan of treatment of subarachnoid haem orrhage (SAH) conservative measures are appropriate for bridging the pre-operative period, and must be considered the only solution in those cases in which the source of haemorrhage cannot be found. As far as the effectiveness of such conservative therapy is con cerned, the rate of re bleeding and the mortality provide sufficient comment.

Hemostasis and Stroke
Author: Christof M. Kessler
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9780849376504
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 182
Book Description
Hemostasis and Stroke presents an exciting and new understanding of current investigations and applications in stroke therapy. Although research in stroke, hematology, and related fields has made enormous progress in the last decade, stroke still remains one of the leading causes of death today. To achieve an interdisciplinary approach to current research and practice in the management of thrombosis of cerebrovascular disorders, scientists and clinicans worldwide met in Lübeck, Germany, in May 1993 for an International Symposium on Hemostasis and Stroke. This book represents the proceedings of the symposium. It also summarizes the results of recent stroke prevention trials, including critical reviews on current recommendations of acetylsalicyclic acid and the usefulness of ticlopidine. In addition, animal models of experimental cerebral ischemia are viewed under their possible application for research in embolic stroke.

The Cerebrospinal Fluid
Author: Robert M. Herndon
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461315913
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 346
Book Description
For centuries the great minds of medical science puzzled over the importance of the cerebrospinal fluid. As far back as Hippocrates, it was thought that this "phlegm" that flooded the intracranial contents had pathological significance. However, not until the late 1800s, when Quincke introduced and popularized lumbar puncture, did physicians take an interest in the study of this fluid in relation to clinical illness. Since then a variety of techniques for obtaining cerebrospinal fluid from various sites have developed, and the relationship of cerebrospinal fluid to a variety of disease processes has received considerable study. In this volume, we have attempted to assemble reviews of some of these important developments during the past century. Chapter 1 contains a historical review of key investigations that helped shape our concepts of cerebrospinal fluid from the earliest recorded description by the author of the Edwin Smith Surgical Papyrus in the seventeenth century B. C. to contemporaries such as Kabat, Glusman, and Knaub, who introduced quantitative determinations of cerebrospinal fluid gamma globulin levels. In Chapter 2 there is a description of our current understanding of the anatomical compartment for the cerebrospinal fluid and the physiology of its formation, circulation, and absorption. Dr. Richard Leech in Chapter 3 contributes a comprehensive description of the disorders associated with excessive quanti ties of cerebrospinal fluid-commonly referred to as hydrocephalus. A variety of techniques for properly collecting and evaluating cerebrospinal fluid are detailed in Chapter 4.
