Book Description
Excerpt from A Manual for the Study of Insects The Manual for the Study of Insects, published in 189 5, was written to meet the needs of teachers of Entomology when that science was in its infancy as an academic study. It was well received and accomplished its purpose, and there has been a continuous call for it since; it is now in its eighteenth edition. Owing to the rapid development Of the science it became necessary to revise the book and I began this before my retire ment in 1914. However, so great has been the growth of Entomology that this intended revision Of the Manual resulted in a new textbook, An Introduction to Entomology. Should the book, imperfect as the author feels it to be, prove of some service in inducing others to study this most interesting and useful branch of natural history, the object of the writer will have been fully attained. Book Description
Excerpt from A Guide to the Study of Insects, and a Treatise on Those Injurious and Beneficial to Crops: For the Use of Colleges, Farm-Schools, and Agriculturists The typical Crustacean cannot be said to have a true head, in distinction from a thorax bearing the organs 'of locomotion, but rather a group of rings, to which are appended the organs of sensation and locomotion. Hence we find the appendages of this region gradually changing from antennae and jaws to foot-jaws, or limbs capable of eating and also of locomotion; they shade into each other as seen in Fig. 9. Sometimes the jaws become remarkably like claws or the legs resemble jaws at the base, but towards their tips become claw-like; gill-like bodies are sometimes attached to the foot-jaws, 'and thus', as stated by Professor J. D. Dana in the introduction to his great work on the Crustacea of the United States Exploring Expedi tion, the typical Crustaceans do not have a distinct head, ' but rather a head-thorax (cephalothorax). Book Description
Excerpt from Guide to the Exhibited Series of Insects The First Edition of this Guide, written by Mr. Chas. O. Waterhouse, being out of print, the author has revised it, with the help of his colleagues in the Insect Section, so as to bring the Second Edition as far as possible into line with the exhibited series of specimens. This has involved a considerable amount of extension; but the Guide must be regarded as provisional, since alterations are still in progress in the Gallery, the arrangement of which is far from complete.
