During the last few years, to the planting and cultivation of Pecans throughout the South and Southwest. When its merits are more generally known, and appreciated, more trees will be planted, and at no distant date the Pecan groves throughout the South, and in many parts of the North and West, will be more popular and more profitable than were once the orange groves of Florida. The Pecan and Hickory are of the same regarmng the family, and in the same soil and under the tree same climatic conditions, where one thrives so will the other. They are found in their wild state, scattered from the Gulf to the Lakes and from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Like the Hickory, the Pecan grows to an enormous size, often measuring from two to three feet in diameter, and is one of the handsomest of shade trees having a large spread with very dense foliage of a dark, rich green. There is a great difference in the quality hegard'ng the and market value'of the nuts from differ nut. Ent sections and from different trees. Some are small, thick-shelled and of poor quality. In planting groves, trees grown from these nuts should be carefully avoided. The best varieties produce nuts that are very large, with thin, brittle shells and delicious flavor. These varieties also come into bearing in a much shorter time than the ordinary kinds and grow much more rapidly. Excerpt from Budding the Pecan Up to the present time it has not been demonstrated that there is a better stock for the reception of buds or grafts Of the pecan than seedling stocks of the same species. In raising pecan seedlings for stocks it is advisable to select seeds from trees at the northern limit of the pecan belt, because, while seedlings from that section will thrive throughout the belt, those from the extreme south can not be expected to prove as hardy and thrifty at the northern limit as those trees which are growing wild in that section. The seed nuts should be secured as early as possible after they are ripe, so as to make certain of preventing loss through drying out. In the number of farms from which nut trees were reported this species easily takes first rank, as pecan trees were reported from farms, black walnuts from farms, Persian walnuts from farms, and almonds from farms. Therefore 16 per cent more farmers were engaged in raising pecans than black walnuts, 124 per cent more than Persian walnuts, and 523 per cent more than almonds.
