Morality has traditionally been understood to be tied to certain metaphysical beliefs: notably, in the freedom of human persons (to choose right or wrong courses of action), in a god (or gods) who serve(s) as judge(s) of moral character, and in an afterlife as the locus of a “final judgment” on individual behavior. Some scholars read the history of moral philosophy as a gradual disentangling of our moral commitments from such beliefs. Kant is often given an important place in their narratives, despite the fact that Kant himself asserts that some of such beliefs are necessary (necessary, at least, from the practical point of view). Many contemporary neo-Kantian moral philosophers have embraced these “disentangling” narratives or, at any rate, have minimized the connection of Kant’s practical philosophy with controversial metaphysical commitments ‐ even with Kant’s transcendental idealism. This volume re-evaluates those interpretations. It is arguably the first collection to systematically explore the metaphysical commitments central to Kant’s practical philosophy, and thus the connections between Kantian ethics, his philosophy of religion, and his epistemological claims concerning our knowledge of the supersensible.

In an earlier book I have considered the origin, the nature, the function, and the future of the belief in what I have called "personal" gods. The present volume is a similar study of the belief in personal immortality. Chapters one to four treat of the origin, the nature, and the function of this belief. They show in particular that two quite different conceptions of personal immortality have been successively elaborated; and that the modern conception is not a growth from the primary belief, but an independent creation, differing radically from it in point of origin, in nature, and in function. Whereas the primary belief was forced upon men irrespective of their wishes as an unavoidable interpretation of certain patent facts (chiefly the apparition of deceased persons in dreams and in visions), the modern belief was born of a desire for the realization of ideals. The first came to point to an exclusively wretched existence, and prompted men merely to guard against the possible danger to them arising from ghosts; the second contemplated from the first endless continuation in a state of completed or increased perfection, and incited the living to ceaseless efforts in order to make themselves fir for that blessed consummation. God, in His providence, has chosen a man through whom to transmit to the generations, the origin of life on this earth. Through Moses the fundamental history was revealed, about who we are, how we got here, why things are so bad and yet there is hope for regaining the original plan. All these are clearly found in the book of Genesis and form the root of our existence. Through Moses was revealed, the panorama of the great struggle between Satan and the Creator. Between Moses and John, the beloved disciple, about 38 authors wrote the word of God. Through John, we have the Revelation, showing the last events of the tragedy sin produced. If we move the complete report of Scripture aside, we will feel we are in the darkness of the many dogmas, traditions, myths, superstitions, non-Christian religions, or evolutionary theories that lack logic. The Christian is called to reason and to filter all that contradicts the divine source, the Bible. Therefore, in order to find an answer to the question on the front cover, "Is the soul immortal?" we will use this source. We have tens and even hundreds of references regarding this subject, which are often ignored. Its advocates are more willing to cut out from the Bible the innumerable clear declarations that the souls of humans are mortal than to give up an idea that comes from outside the Bible. It is true that people were created to live eternally. However, sin interfered with the condition for retaining immortality. For this reason, Plan B had to be set in motion. Through the death of the only One who has eternal life, a way of recovering immortality was opened. Life, time, and talents do not belong to us. They are the master's wealth. [ Matthew 25: 14,15 ] Limited portions are given to us. No one has received an unlimited number of talents. The Master first wanted to see what would be done with the talents given during this life. We cannot claim that we were given an immortal soul, when our lives, time, and talents are given to us temporarily. The way in which we use this short life, our members and given aptitudes will constitute the test required in order to receive eternal life. In order to obtain eternal life, a single thing is needed: "And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent" (John 17:3).
