Book Description
The confrontation between European countries and the expanding Ottoman Empire in the early modern era has played a major role in numerous fields of history. The aim of this book is to investigate the European-Ottoman interrelations from three angles. One deals with the circumstances: How did the Europeans meet the Turks in pragmatic and diplomatic connections? Another concerns imagery: how were the Turks depicted in literature and art? The third examines performativity: how were the Turks inserted into plays, operas and ceremonies? This book confronts mental, visual and embodied images with historical positions and conditions. The focus, therefore, is on the dynamic interactive processes of experience, embodiment and imagination in context. Bringing together Turkish and European scholars, it applies a number of research strategies used by historians to the history of art, literature, music and theatre. Contributions by Pál Ács | Robert Born | Asli Çirakman | Anne Duprat | Kate Fleet | Bent Holm | Marcus Keller | Maria Pia Pedani | Mogens Pelt | Mikael Bøgh Rasmussen | Günsel Renda | Pia Schwarz Lausten | Charlotte Colding Smith | Suna Suner | Dirk Van Waelderen

Book Description
The familiar figure of Shakespeare, the world’s greatest dramatist, belongs to universal culture. Little is known of his life, more of his plays, yet countless analyses and explanations of them have been written by distinguished experts on literature and aesthetics. Rónaszegi has no wish to join the ranks of these scholars and has instead chosen an unusual format. In his own words, he has written ‘a sketch novel’, albeit one that is filled with erudition, perceptiveness, appraisal, and fascinating information. Every one of Shakespeare’s plays contains a reference to the theatre and acting, the most famous being the lines from As You Like It: ‘All the world’s a stage.’ But it was not acting itself that inspired the playwright, nor was he absorbed in the minutiae of everyday theatrical life – Shakespeare’s great insight is that the whole of human life is nothing more than endless posturing and posing. One moment we are masking our personalities and concealing our intentions, while the next we are acting in character or responding to the expectations of those around us. We perform not to an audience but to ourselves and to one another. This, then, is the real secret that Rónaszegi uncovers, while modestly acknowledging in the course of his brilliant narrative that no one will ever be able to unravel the mystery of Shakespeare’s genius. www.ronaszegimiklos.com

Book Description
In the court of Elizabeth I, the daughter of the queen’s powerful spymaster becomes a secret agent, and plays a dangerous role in saving her country from its ruthless enemies. In Tudor England, traitors are everywhere and the queen’s spymaster, Sir Francis Walsingham, is assembling the greatest intelligence-gathering network in the world. Walsingham’s only daughter, Lady Frances Sidney, is smart, courageous, and unhappy in love. She longs for the excitement of decoding encrypted messages and setting traps for those working for rival Mary, Queen of Scots. But Frances's father refuses her any opportunity to contribute to the desperate effort of keeping England safe. Then Elizabeth, impressed with Frances’s fiery spirit, calls her to court as a lady-in-waiting, and Frances seizes the chance to prove herself. Soon, she wins the trust of her father’s de-coders and begins her secret work, thrilled with the freedom to test her talents. But her peril is compounded as her beauty and wit also attract the romantic attention of two men, one the reckless Earl of Essex and the other her own brilliant but low-born servant, Robert Pauley. And when Frances uncovers the most dire plot of all, she will risk her father’s condemnation, her heart’s longing, and her very life to safeguard her queen.
