Karl Otten lebte als deutscher Exilant und Schriftsteller auf der Flucht vor dem Nazi-Regime zwischen 1933 und 1936 in Cala Ratjada im Nordostern Mallorcas. Seine hier erstmalig herausgegebenen satirischen „Geschichten aus Pueblo“ (Ottens Tarnname für Cala Ratjada) zeichnen ein oft geradezu befremdliches Bild von den rückständigen Verhältnissen auf der damals noch wenige bekannten Baleareninsel. Mittels dieser eigentümlichen Erzählskizzen, die spürbar in der Tradition des deutschen Expressionismus stehen, tauchen wir als Leser ein in die ländliche Inselwelt eines kleinen mallorquinischen Fischerdorfes lange vor Einsetzen des Massentourismus, aber unmittelbar vor Ausbruch des grausamen Spanischen Bürgerkriegs (1936 – 39). Wer heute als Besucher nach Cala Ratjada kommt, wird kaum noch etwas vom Geist und Ambiente dieser verloren gegangene Welt vorfinden. Einzig der „Torre Cega“ der Villa March und der Leuchtturm „Far de Capdepera“, beides wichtige Handlungsorte in Ottens Geschichten, thronen nach wie vor unbeeindruckt über der Bucht und laden ein zu einer Zeitreise in eine andere, aber keineswegs bessere Welt.

The introduction (pp. 1-8) notes that Nazi brutality operated in a special way against Jewish married women, who "were singled out and targeted as mediators of Nazi policies"; for example, after "Kristallnacht" they were forced to secure emigration papers in order to obtain the release of their husbands from concentration camps. Mentions that in 1939 there remained in Germany 135 Jewish women for every 100 Jewish men, suggesting that more men fled abroad.
