Book Description
Excerpt from The Geological Magazine, Vol. 5: January December, 1888 There is no question here of the formation of definite compounds of nitre and water, but in the words of Dr. Guthrie fused nitre and fused ice are miscible in all proportions, the result of the increase of water being a proportional lowering of the fusion-points. The phenomenon of fusion is shown by Guthrie to be nothing more than an extreme case of liquefaction by solution. Indeed, it is impossible to define where solution ends and fusion begins; when, for example, one part of water is present in 555 parts of a salt, it would be hard to consider the latter' as dissolved in the former. Book Description
Excerpt from The Geological Magazine, or Monthly Journal of Geology, 1918, Vol. 5: With Which Is Incorporated the Geologist, Nos. 643 to 654; Decade Vi The primitive and ccnservative nature of the Holectypoida' among Irregular Echinoids has been so Often indicated, and indeed is so manifest, that it may be taken for granted without further argument. It follows from this that there are but two alternative possibilities for the lines of descent of all other Orders of the sub-class. Either they must have arisen from some Regular stock independently of the Holectypoida, in which case they need show no special resemblances to that group save under the influence of parallelism of development or else they must have descended directly or indirectly from Holectypoid ancestors. 'in the present paper a brief description of the peristomial characters of certain representative Irregular Echinoids is given, and an attempt is made to indicate the presence or absence of relationship to the Holectypoida shown by this fragment of evidence. The genera whose internal test-structure has been examined for this purpose are C'lypeaster, Echz'nooyamus, and Echin amchm'us among the Clypeastroida, qcleolz'tes and Trematopygus among the Nucleolitoida, Conulopsz's' among the ?cassiduloida, and Eol[znocorys, Me'omster, and Ecln'nocardz'um among the Spatangoida. In the case of the first and last mentioned Orders, the genera studied may be taken as fairly representative of the groups to which they belong; but the other 'two Orders (usually grouped together under the name here restricted to the latter) are very imperfectly illustrated. This is accounted for by the extreme difficulty of the preparation of the Jurassic forms and the virtual impossibility, under existing circumstances, of acquiring suitable material of the Casse'dulus Eclzz'nolampas series, which are almost unrepresented in the British fauna, both past and present. Book Description
Excerpt from Geological Magazine, 1878, Vol. 5 Since its foundation as a Science, at the beginning of this century, by the illustrious Cuvier, Palæontology has progressed with an astonishing rapidity; and though theoretically belonging to the twin sciences of Zoology and Botany, its domain is now so vast, and the number of facts which it has accumulated is so great, that it has every claim to rank as a distinct department of knowledge, which cannot be fully mastered except by those who make it the subject of special study. That the number of these is daily increasing is shown conclusively by the increased number of systematic works on Palæontology which have appeared of late years, and not less by the character of these. Two of these treatises, both as yet but partially published, may be singled out for mention in this connexion - namely, the "Handbuch der Palæontologie" by Professors Zittel and Schimper, and the new "Lethæa Geognostica" by an association of German palæontologists. The former of these, if carried out with the fulness and accuracy which distinguish its first portion, will be one of the most valuable and important treatises on systematic palæontology which we possess in any language, and will be a fitting companion to the classical treatises of Pictet and D'Orbigny, though it will not supersede either of these honoured works. Of the second of these only the first part, embracing the Atlas of Plates of Palæozoic fossils, has as yet been issued; but if the text be equal to the plates, and if the various sections of the work are undertaken by men as eminent as Ferdinand Roemer, the new "Lethæa Geognostica" will undoubtedly form an indispensable item in the library of every working palæontologist. If it be the Germans whom the student has to thank for these new systematic treatises, it is to the English-speaking races that we owe the latest attempts to reduce the present chaotic condition of palæontology to order, by establishing a bibliography of the science, and by the preparation of catalogues of the fossils of particular formations or of particular countries. In carrying out the first of these ends, the successful foundation of the "Geological Record" must be regarded as a great step in advance. Book Description
Excerpt from The Geological Magazine, or Monthly Journal of Geology, Vol. 5: With Which Is Incorporated "the Geologist"; January December, 1898 N Mr. W. A. Sanford described, in the Proceedings, of the I Somerset Archaeological Society '(vol. Xl, 1894, p. The geological circumstances of the discovery of a large fossil reptile. The fossil bones were found by the Rev. Sydenham H. A. Hervey and himself 1n the Rhaetic beds in the parish of Wedmore, in the Vale of Glastonbury; and compared to Megalosaurus in its large size and carnivorous character. The remains were generously presented to the British Museum (natural History) at South Kensington. I have now to redeem a promise made by Mr. Sanford in his paper that I would name and describe the specimens. Book Description
Excerpt from The Geological Magazine, or Monthly Journal of Geology, Vol. 4: January December, 1907 Director of the Geological Survey of Scotland, however remote his field of work might be, his ever-active pen and pencil kept him in touch with the world at large. The Story of a Boulder. Gleanings from the Notebook of a Geologist his Memoir of Edward Forbes The Scenery Of Scotland viewed in connection with its Physical Geology (1865, 3rd edition and many other of his writings 1 were read with the keenest enjoyment. We published in February, 1890, a portrait of Sir A. Geikie and a brief summary of his work up to that date, just prior to his election for the first time as President of the Geological Society. The addresses which he gave during the two years that he occupied the chair formed the nucleus Of perhaps his most important work, published in 1897 under the title of The Ancient Volcanoes of Great Britain, two volumes, beautifully printed and illustrated. In the same year he established the Summary of Progress Of the Geological Survey, an annual publication which gives an official record of the work done by this institution. He prefaced the first number with an account of the Origin and History of the Geological Survey and Museum, a subject which he had dealt with more personally in 1895 in his Memoir of Sir Andrew Crombie Ramsay. While still Director General he edited in 1899 a third volume of Hutton's Theory of the Earth, from the ms. That had long been in the possession of the Geological Society.
