Book Description
Two laser pumped Nd: YAG lasers were frequency stabilized to a commercial 6.327 GHz free spectral range Fabry-Perot interferometer yielding a best case beatnote linewidth of 330 MHz. In addition, a Fabry-Perot interferometer with a free spectral range of 680 MHz, a linewidth of 25 kHz, and a finesse of 27,500 was built, and when it was substituted in place of the commercial interferometer, it produced a robust and easily repeatable beatnote linewidth of 700 MHz. Book Description
This thesis is dedicated to measurement of optical frequencies with applications in metrology. The frequency/time interval is the best measurable quantity. The invention of the femtosecond frequency comb technique greatly simplified linking the radio-frequency and the optical-frequency standards. A primary wavelength standard for optical communications was developed in the first part of this work: the distributed feedback (DFB) laser diode was frequency stabilized to sub-Doppler spectral line of acetylene at 1540 nm and its research, investigation of properties and absolute frequency measurements are described. The implementation and testing of commercial femtosecond comb makes second part of this work. Software for online frequency evaluation, tests of counting quality and frequency stabilization of the comb to optical frequency standard - iodine stabilized Nd: YAG laser - are described.

Book Description
The objective of the work reported herein is to achieve stable, single-frequency second harmonic power output from a Nd:YAG laser. Particular emphasis is placed on frequency and amplitude stability and on conversion efficiency. The experimental results of this program indicate that frequency and amplitude stable frequency-doubled operation of the single-frequency Nd:YAG laser can be achieved. Single-frequency operation is obtained by the use of a ring cavity containing a differential loss and frequency-doubled operation by the use of an intracavity 5 cu mm barium sodium niobate crystal. The 1.06 microns laser output is 3/4 to 1 W and the maximum 0.53 microns output is 140 mW. Degradation of the crystal reduced this level to a repeatable 50 to 100 mW frequency stable to + or - 12 MHz and amplitude stable to + or - 4 percent over a number of minutes operating period. Thermal effects in the nonlinear crystal arising from absorption of the fundamental wavelength radiation were found to limit the amplitude and frequency stability of the laser output. The same effects distort the 0.53 microns farfield beam profile and reduce the conversion efficiency. Techniques necessary to achieve stable frequency-doubled operation of the single-frequency Nd;YAG laser were established during this program. Further improvement in the stability and conversion efficiency depends on the availability of barium sodium niobate crystals with low absorption at 1.06 microns. (Author).

Book Description
Work in the stabilization of monolithic Nd: YAG lasers and the application of these lasers to nonlinear optical frequency conversion is discussed. The intrinsic stability of semiconductor diode laser pumped solid state lasers has facilitated a number of demonstration in external resonant cavity harmonic generation and stable optical parametric oscillation. Relative laser frequency stabilization of 0.3 Hz was achieved, and absolute stability of a few hundred hertz is anticipated. The challenge is now to reproduce this frequency stability in the output of tunable nonlinear optical devices. Theoretical and experimental work toward this goal are continuing. Byer, Robert L. Book Description
This volume contains the lectures and seminars presented at the NATO Ad vanced Study Institute on "Solid State Lasers: New Developments and Appli cations" the fifteenth course of the Europhysics School of Quantum Electronics, held under the supervision of the Quantum Electronics Division of the European Physical Society. The Institute was held at Elba International Physics Center, Marciana Marina, Elba Island, Tuscany, Italy, August 31 -September 11, 1992. The Europhysics School of Quantum Electronics was started in 1970 with the aim of providing instruction for young researchers and advanced students al ready engaged in the area of quantum electronics or wishing to switch to this area from a different background. Presently the school is under the direction of Professors F.T. Arecchi and M. Inguscio, University of Florence, and Prof. H. Walther, University of Munich, and has its headquarters at the National Insti tute of Optics (INO), Florence, Italy. Each time the directors choose a subject of particular interest, alternating fundamental topics with technological ones, and ask colleagues specifically competent in a given area to take the scientific responsibility for that course.

Book Description
A selected set of reprints from the Optical Frequency Measurement Group of the Time and Frequency Div. of the Nat. Inst. of Standards and Technology and consists of work published between 1987 and 1997. The 2 programs represented are (1) development of tunable diode-laser technology for scientific applications and precision measurements, and (2) research toward the goal of realizing optical-frequency measurements and synthesis. The papers are organized in 5 categories: diode laser technology; tunable laser systems; laser spectroscopy; optical synthesis and extended wavelength coverage; and multi-photon interactions and optical coherence.
