Book Description
Excerpt from French Railways The following notes on the Railways of France are put together from information collected during a series of years, in which, through the kindness of many of the Managers and Officials, I have had opportunities of seeing much of these railways that was interesting. My most sincere thanks are due to a large number of gentlemen connected with the various French railways - particularly the Nord, P.L.M. and P.O. Especially must I refer to Monsieur Rudloff of the Chemin de fer du Nord, his unvarying kindness on the innumerable occasions on which we have made expeditions together and the great interest of the information he has given me. Book Description
Excerpt from North-Eastern France If he recollects that there is no unpunctuality of trains in France as in England. French trains are always punctual to a moment. If he remembers that, when he is at a place for one night only, it is unnecessary to remove his luggage from the station, should a hand-bag be sufficient. The luggage ticket must be kept and presented to be re newed upon leaving. If a traveller stays more than one night at a place, as each piece of luggage is charged 10 c. A day at the consigne, it is better to take it to the hotel. If he remembers that the railway companies only undertake to refund 4 for the most valuable box lost on the railway; and that on that account it may be better never unnecessarily to leave a valuable box in their charge. Book Description
Excerpt from The Channel Railway Connecting England and France: Illustrated by Chart of Soundings, and Lithographed Plans The idea of tunnelling is much the oldest; a French engineer, Mathieu, sixty years ago, considered the work practicable, pre pared plans, and laid them before Napoleon, then First Consul they were some time exposed in the Luxembourg and other public galleries in Paris; but they have long been lost; and there is now, it appears, no account extant of the then proposed method of accomplishing the work. The project of M. De Gamond, also a tunnel, appeared in 1856-7, and may be reckoned, along with others that appeared about the same time, as fruit of the exhibitions of 1851-4. Book Description
Excerpt from Railway Construction: Second Series, Illustrated With 91 Plates of Railways Executed, With Scales in French and English; Also Railways in the East and All High Thermometrical Regions The attempt is not made without considerable reluctance on the part of the writer, from his having an earnest feeling that there are many whose pens would be much more able to do justice to a task of which he fully appreciates the difficulty; but having been persuaded to undertake it, he can only endeavour to compensate for want of ability by being the more assiduous in his thoughts, by the most complete truthfulness, and the sincerity of his desire to render some assistance to those who, year after year, may have to follow in the path which he has himself gone over before, where they will find their energies very fairly tested, many anxieties to bear and difficulties to contend against, in order to do that justice to their responsibilities which every true engi neer is determined to perform at any cost.
