Publisher: The Countryman Press
ISBN: 1581579047
Category : Travel
Languages : en
Pages : 584
Book Description
The second edition of this guide to the "Garden State" reveals the historic, cultural, and ecological diversity of the state. Includes extensive coverage of the Jersey Shore and Atlantic City. New Jersey is a state full of wonders to surprise curious travelers and residents alike. This guide leads you away from the busy interstate highways to reveal the cultural, historic, and geographical diversity that lies beyond the New Jersey Turnpike. For wine connoisseurs, there are more than 25 wineries that offer tours, tastings, and festivals; for history buffs, New Jersey, known as the "Cockpit of the Revolution," offers battlefield state parks, monuments, and reenactments. And that's not all: New Jersey's 127-mile shoreline has many diverse communities, including the historic Victorian seaside resort of Cape May, itself a national historic landmark; the casinos of Atlantic City; the natural beauty of Island Beach State Park, with sand dune-scattered, long, white beaches, nature trails, birding, surfing, and guided kayak tours; and the hip shore town of Red Bank, with art galleries, boutiques, bistros, and jazz clubs. In addition, this comprehensive guide to the state includes opinionated listings of inns, B&Bs, hotels, and vacation cabins; hundreds of dining reviews, from diners to four-star restaurants; up-to-date maps; an alphabetical "What's Where" subject guide to aid in trip planning; and handy icons that point out family-friendly establishments, wheelchair access, places of special value, and lodgings that accept pets.

Franklin, Hamburg, Ogdensburg, and Hardyston
Author: William R. Truran
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 9780738536361
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 132
Book Description
Franklin, Hamburg, Ogdensburg, and Hardyston chronicles the settlement and life of the Wallkill Valley area of northern New Jersey. In rare photographs, the book reveals the history of the people and places in the communities of Franklin, Hamburg, Ogdensburg, and Hardyston. Beginning entirely as Hardyston Township, the area developed into four communities, each with distinctive qualities. Franklin is the "Fluorescent Mineral Capital of the World," as declared by the U.S. Congress, and with its zinc mines, is known as the "Model Mining Town of America." Hamburg from early times was a crossroads and business district. Ogdensburg possessed several mines and Thomas Edison interests. Hardyston, with its lakes for summer visitors and still-thriving farmland, retains the beauty of its natural surroundings.

Backwards Tunnel
Author: Wasco Hadowanetz
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 1435740394
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 78
Book Description
"Backwards" TunnelThis book relates the historical sequence of how a glacial embankment influenced railroad engineers to provide service to Ogdensburg, New Jersey; and the crucial role that the "Backwards" Tunnel played in making it possible. It also describes the actions that were taken to save this dual-arched structure. In this volume Wasco settles the debate as to whether or not the Midland Engineers built the "Backwards" Tunnel correctly. During the early to mid-nineteenth century, a race was ongoing among competing eastern railroad companies to build the quickest and most profitable routes to New York City markets. The decision was made to proceed from Middletown through the Munson's Gap. To reach this gap they had to bridge what was called a "yawning gulch" in Ogdensburg. Engineers decided to resolve this problem by building what was later called the "Backwards" Tunnel. Although the glacial moraine facilitated rail construction, building the tunnel was to be a formidable task.
